"Revolver" Cannon
« on: April 16, 2013, 04:32:54 PM »
I was looking up something out of the scope of this forum, it had a link to Wikipedia "Revolver Cannon".  Along the side was this photo:

with a "citation needed" (or something like that) notation.

I'm sure one of you has information on this.  Can you share it, please?

Joseph,

You will find a whole thread on that one from 2006 or 2007, I believe.  There was quite a lively discussion on the probable purpose of various parts.  If memory serves, I believe that most considered it a hazard to the operator due to positioning of alternate barrels which could, of course, be loaded.

Smokin' my pipe on the mountings, sniffin' the mornin'-cool,
I walks in my old brown gaiters along o' my old brown mule,
With seventy gunners be'ind me, an' never a beggar forgets
It's only the pick of the Army that handles the dear little pets - 'Tss! 'Tss!

No, that's a cylinder.  And it needs to be drilled for the base pin.

found this, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16SIvVKtuks&feature=player_embedded From the markings on it, looks to be a 1.10 inch bore with a suggested charge of just over a quarter pound of powder.

Thanks, gents.  I'll do some snooping around in the older posts.
