« on: April 14, 2013, 03:55:39 PM »
ok i need a new source for scale cannon wheels, at a real price. i will pay 80 dollars a wheel in the 16 to 20 inch wheel range, but these fools on the net want more then i pay for 42 inch wheels, i have already looked on our list and came up empty. has anybody really started making wheels yet?

Scale cannon wheels, may I suggest that to overcome the problem of sourcing wooden wheels it might be worthwhile considering casting the 20” in aluminium.
It was found in the UK that a proprietary cannon with circa 12” wooden wheel were prone to breaking when the cannon was dropped, couldn’t stand the repetitive shock and moved in changes in relative humidity. It might be a good idea to acquire one ‘expensive’ wheel, use it as a pattern, cast several and sell them. The machining is quite straight forward.  Ok they may not suit the purists, so what, they work and will take all the abuse of being used.

The wheels were 'sand cast' however a local  industrial lost wax caster belives the can deliver good casting for a reasonable cost including the cost of the master mould.

It all depends on how much time/£/skill & patience one has.

The attached image shows a 12” dia wheel cast in aviation grade aluminium by the same foundry that cast the ‘Gun metal’ barrels.

Materials alone would cost $30 or so per wheel for that size wheel.

I was thinkin....after amortizing the time ($) to build jigs and fixtures, material, overhead, taxes and insurance that the only thing left would be to sue yourself for violation of the minimum wage law.

And then you would only be capable of making one size wheel! :-\ :-\

After my recent adventure in wheel building, I can honestly say that its incredible how the hours fly away.  Even with my little cnc-mill, and some fixtures its still laber intensive. Not saying it cant be done, but I dont think we ever will se cheap well build cannon wheels in different scale sizes. the market is to small for anyone trying to make a profit by doing it industrial style..

Anyway, you could try to look up an Ardesa dealer and try to buy the wheels as "spare parts". I know Ardesa are sold under different brand in the US, but cant remember what name.. ::)
The wheels are not super scale, but are made for a .69 cal shooter so I guess they should have the needed strength.

Haven't we been this route before?  Weren't those wheels made of some type of composite material instead of wood?
Am I remembering correctly?

Dont waste your time contacting Ardesa for spare parts, I have tried and they promptly ask you to contact a local dealer.  Been there, done that..

Zulu  Iˋm not 100% sure but I think that the wheels are made of wood. I have seen one up close years back, but it was a old cannon (bought in France in the late -70) Newer production models could have composite wheels of course..

Zulu,
You are thinking of the pot metal fake brass cannon with the pot metal hardware that have been discussed a time or two these cannon are shooters with wood wheels and steel hardware...
I doubt a dealer would be able to or want to bother ordering parts for these or if they would price would go up quickly.....

look i have paid 160 dollars for a set of wheels in the past on ebay but the seller is no longer selling these wheel and they are great,  I can buy a model airplane that can fly by remote control but i can find affordable wheels, I guess i will stick with full scale guns,  hell the wheels are the same price and scale seacoast guns. I do like the idea for the cast wheels, tho i am thinking more on the idea of cast wood epoxy product. till then i will be on the hunt.

Does these Amish wheels have a dish build into them. Its hard to tell from the pictures on ebay..
If they have an dish build into tem, its a very good price. actually to a point that I cant understand how they can turn a profit..

Building a straight wheel without the dish is certenly way faster. And could easy be done at a production rate..

Amish cannon wheels...  Definition of contradiction in terms... :P ??

Flat wheels can work ok  :)   Of course the dish is a distinctive feature of these old cannons, but dont be put of just because they are ""flat"..
I build this litte noise maker during a weekend, while waiting for the AOP plans. It got flat wheels, and even though it would be nicer with dished wheels, most people look at the cannon as a whole, not getting cought up in details.

Hmmm, need to find some time to make some hardware.. It looks kind of naked as is :-)

I would rather say that the dimension of the wheel are a bigger "flaw" than the fact that they are flat.
If they where a tad bigger, and a more narrow they would look good..

These wheels were provided by my customer.  They are 2" wide.  I let him know it would look a little out of proportion and he said he could live with it.
