CVA black powder measurer vs Lee safety powder scale
« on: May 22, 2013, 07:31:37 AM »
I have one of the CVA black powder measure and when I set it for 80 grains using RS powder and then check the accuracy on my Lee safety powder scale it comes out to only 52 grains. Do I use the Lee scale to set my CVA measure? Or is the CVA set to volume and the lee set to weight?

That's the ticket. Black Powder is measured by VOLUME  for our purposes in the ML gun..
The replicates like Pyrodex,T7 and others are also measured by volume and listed on the jug as "equivalent to" a certain grade of Black Powder.

Pay no attention to the actual weight on a beam scale as there is no equal comparison of the 2 separate measurements.

It all as to do with centuries old troubles that came about because of the different makers of powder world wide. Nothing was standardized until late in the 19th century, and we simply have a holdover of those old methods.

volume measures give an approximate weight. it will be +/- a bit dependin' on several variables. an 80gr volume equivalent of pyrodex weighs 55gr so yer measure is actually pretty close. save that beam scale for when yer loadin' yer long-range cartridge ammo.

Lots of us started loading smokeless powder ammo with a set of lee dippers. There was a chart and it showed the dipper # and grain weight it threw with each powder. The correct dipper came with the old lee loader set but worked with a press & dies.  :o my blackpowder measure was made by TC I've used it since about 1970 or so when I got my first black powder rifle.  ;)
