M77 Hawkeye vrs. Savage 11x
« on: April 16, 2013, 09:52:12 PM »
Hi All,
Which do you feel is the better gun... the current M77 or the current Savage 110, 111, 114, or 116 series?

I'm leaning toward the M77 in 30-06. (Would really like the Gunsite sometimes, but they seem to be backordered way out...)

Leaning toward the Ruger because it looks to me like a Ruger-ized 98 Mauser action.

But... the modularity of the Savage 110 line is pretty sharp too. The Accutrigger seems a neat idea too. But just seems to me the Ruger is the the "tougher" of the two designs.

Your thoughts?

Looks, fit and finish hands down the hawkeye wins that battle. Accuracy wize though id have to give that fight to the savage.

Not really worried about looks so much.

It's the possibility of breakage and/or jams if I ever have to use it hard or fast, that's on the back of my mind.

For example. Slapping a milsurp bolt around, seems to be something they're fairly impervious to.

After watching disassembly vids of the Savage bolt... I'm like... that looks really flimsy. Obiously the design works... how many have they sold in the last 50 years?

On other hand, the M77 is a watered down, cast Mauser 98.

But I saw vid where the review seems to think they all bind. He had both a M77 sporter and GSR rifle and both seem to bind up if you weren't good with your technique. (They were stainless and seemed brand new though). One theory heard on that is that M77 doesn't have that 3rd guide bump on the bolt that 98's have that ride in the bridge.

Some days, I wish I could just order a brand new in box 98 Mauser in full Military trim but in 30-06 with provisions for a scope and be done with it. LOL!

For whatever reasons, sporters just seem, well... too sporty and flimsy as a result of it to me. (And I'm horribly careful with my guns... but like to know they have more solidity than I'd ever use.)

I guess, since the first serious rifle I bought as a kid was Garand, that's sort of my yardstick.
