What say ye? Acc barrel order time

.357 is on my barrel order list, but I'm having a difficult time deciding between the thuddy-thuddy and the '06.  Ballistically the 30-30 will fill my needs, but locally the '06 appears easier to procure.  I'm not a fan of the heavier (though not abusive) recoil of the '06 and can't handload it down a notch or two.  I'm just not set up for it.  I can take other measures though.  I also like the idea of iron sights on the factory 30-30.  Either way, I'd only immediately need ammo for the 30cal since I have a few hundred .357mags around.  Or would you suggest a 12ga and just go Maxi though I doubt I'll ever buy Maxi ammo?  Apparently the throat change will help accuracy with mags.

another .357 and the .30-30 are on my want list. I want to rechamber the .30-30 to .30-40 krag. the .357 would probably later become the .356 win. i did the ream to maximum on my first .357, have not regretted that.

I think Remington still makes the 30-06 in a reduced recoil version, 125 grn at about 2600 fps. Should be pretty easy on the shoulder if you have to use factory ammo.

I had a reworked and sporterized Mauser in '06.  The recoil wasn't punishing, just not pleasant compared to the smaller calibers I had.  I can deal with it and know that for me it is not a gun I shoot all day at the range.  Hunting with it will be a non-issue though.  I have a pellet gun for trigger time now and only have to go out the side door.  It is more about projected availibility of ammo since both are popular.  For my needs, I know just the .357 will work, but why not use the shipping cost to my advantage?

30-30 will likely do what you want then, and open sights to boot. "A fine small-bore express" according to T.R., and I concur.

The 30-30 without a doubt.  One of the best, and most accurate Handi barrels made.  Get one you won't regret it.  If you ever tire of it, sell it in the classifieds, it'll be gone quick.  Can't say the same for the 06.

BTW, I'm not saying the 30-06 is a bad caliber, just that in a Handi, the 30-30 is a better choice.  Unless of course your Sourdough.

You need to give some serious thought to reloading.  Perhaps they're not there right now, but usually components are readily available on line if not locally.  You don't have to depend on what's available in nearby stores. You can create any kind of load you want.  I was a fool and didn't start reloading until I was 69. 

I'd be sure to get the .357.  Ream it to max and enjoy.  It doesn't get any better.  You'll get lots of trigger time for your buck.

Form filled out: .357 and 30-30.  Hopefully I will be able to start reloading by years end, but need to work with what I have and can get until then.  Will call to get return number later today and get it sent out.  Thanks for the input.

I have a hunch you will never regret either one of those purchases! get the reamer for the max on the way. everyone who has done thiers reports improved accuracy with 38s and .357mags after the reaming especially with heavy for caliber bullets. I have some 200gr sil bullets i want to try.

Yeah, I'm sure I'll be happy with my choices.  Now to figure out sighting systems....

I also just found a case of 170gr 30-30 CoreLokt for $20 a box, and a few PPU 170gr for $16 a box.  Wish I could afford more than 3 boxes.

Ilion received the receiver yesterday, work approved and parts designated today, should be home in 2-3 weeks.  I was told it may be less, but it is all good.

A simple Lee Loader kit will reload your 30-30 easily. They don't seem too popular these days but will get the job done, easily and fast enough. Save your empties! When you get set up you can reload your brass pretty cheap, and use pointy bullets or cast bullets in your 30-30 single shot.

Trouble with the Lee Loaders is that now you can buy at set of 'real dies' off our classifieds cheaper, or for no more. A simple sgl. station press or Lee's Hand Press and you have a much more satisfactory set up and can grow into reloading more calibers.

Right now I have ZERO space for storing components/powder, etc.  I'm not going to keep the powder in the safe for concerns about what would happen if the place ever did catch fire.  The hand loader is what I've been looking at to get started though.  I'd eventually like to get into casting too.  For now though, I'm glad I am able to add a few more calibers to my tool chest.

With the Lee Hand Press or even a small sgl. station on a small board base that you C-clamp onto a bench, etc., and especially the Lee Loader, a priming tool box of bullets and a pound of powder it all fits into a 'shoebox' or even a small flip-lid 'toolbox'. M first set-up went into a smallish old tackle box. There's room for reloading even if you live in a small travel trailer or pick-up camper.
The old-timers (what age does a guy have to be to be an old timer?) could carry it in a small part of a saddlebag.
