Looked at a sharps today

The little gun shop in McMinnville, OR has a used sharps and I couldn't resist fondling it today.  I must be getting old but damn, that rifle is heavy.  It's a Montana Sharps and I don't know if the barrel is any heavier that normal but if it's not, it's no wonder the buffalo hunters carried cross sticks to shoot from. 

They're asking 900 bux for it so it's not like I'm in a hurry to buy it but it was tempting.  It also doesn't have any sights but there are screws on top of the barrel for a scope mount.  It looks like it takes some odd really long scope that probably is expensive too.

It would have to be something special to out shoot Handi rifle and I can hold that one up just fine.  I still want it, I must also be getting crazy in my old age...

Is that the shop with the French Bulldog? I bought a heavy one too, a Pedersoli rolling block, weighs 12 pounds and is worth a set of shooting sticks. I shoot mine to 500 yards...FUN!

I didn't notice a dog but the place is on 2nd street a couple blocks from the post office.  They seem like nice guys there but so far I've only bought a cricket there for one of my grandkids.  I'd probably go back for it but $900 is a big much for an impulse purchase.  ;D

If that Shiloh is a B serial number, you'ld best jump on it if possible, chances are you could double your money in a week on gunbroker. If there is no B in the serial number then it's still a good buy , providing the thing hasn't been abused.
 When it comes to Sharps v Handi, I'll only say this, at the Quigley and other such "buffalo" matches I can think of not one time did a Handi  finish in the top ten, and I'ld be really surprised if any ever finished in the top 30%.
 Just depends on what you want/expect out of your rifle, short range blast the target the handi will do it all day long,stretch the range out past 200 yds and the Handi will get left in the dust.

Things must have changed in McMinnville since I left two years ago next month. The only shop then was on Hwy. 99 just west of the Taco Bell.

I was away then.   I moved from McMinnville to Portland around 92 and at that time there was a rather dumb guy running a gun shop over near the DQ and he moved there from Bunn Village just outside of town.  There was a cool archery shop there back then too.

I used to volunteer time at that gun shop because I new 10x more than that guy with the hopes he'd give me a good deal from time to time.  He was as much of a tightwad as he was dumb and I stopped going there.  I was on my 3rd and final trip through college at the time and I was broke most of the time... 

Anyway as I may have mentioned before I'm SW of Mac in Willamina and there ain't diddly squat out here...

I think Handi rifles could do better in the matches but most of the competitors are a bit too snobby to shoot one.  I know a guy that used to live in the Oregon City area that used to do well with one of the earlier .45-70s.  That was about around 1990 and I don't know if the rifle was new at the time or if he'd had it awhile.  I do know that those he competed against hated that rifle...

Snobby has nothing to do with competitors using the Handi rifle. It's not allowed in NRA competitions as it has no provenance to the time period specified,wasn't around at the time the rules were set up and nobody has ever tried to petition the rules committee to allow them..
There are dozens of handirifles used in the buffalo gong matches , and there is no way you can keep the verticle string out of the lock up, let alone the separation of the front and rear sights by a pivoting pin,that won't show up at 300 but will be enough to thro the shot over and under a target at 700+ yds.

yup if thats truely a Shiloh Sharps that has to be the steal of the century at 900 bucks. More on the line of what a pedersoli runs used

I worked at Davison Auto Parts in the Mac store for about 20 years and the Carlton store for 5. I escaped back east of the mountains in May of 2011. I used to go through Willamina on the way to the coast, up the creek and over the top...the scenic route.

Odds are we've met.  I've spent a lot of money at that store in the times I've lived in Mac.  This is what I look like these days but I was most likely a lot less gray then...

There used to be some good hunting out that way but for the life of me I can't find the places I used to go and the guys I hunted with back then have all moved on to the happy hunting grounds...

If I ever win the lottery I'll get a Shiloh Sharps even if I do have to carry a set of cross sticks to shoot it.  I have too many open slots in my safe and not enough cash to fill them...
