My New Savage Target Action
« on: March 22, 2013, 08:23:59 AM »
I just got my new barrel and set it on the action. I am still waiting on the stock. the stock ordered is a laminated Blue/Blue/Black Varmint stock with a heavy barrel channel. I used this old stock to just get things going and get some loads made up and zero the scope while I wait on the final stock. Here are a couple of pictures.

BTW it is a Savage Target action with right bolt and left port. I had the barrel made in 222 Remington. I really like the triple deuce thus laotto222, my first varmint rifle was a Remington 788 in 222 Remington and it was very accurate. This is a Brux barrel with 1-14" twist. The scope is a Weaver Target series that has fine cross hairs with 1/8" dot and is 36X. It weighs in at 9.8 pounds. The laminated stock will get it near 10.5 pounds.

I got tired of waiting for the stock from Sharp Shooters Supply, so I ordered one from Boyd's Stocks. Here is a picture of it.

I still will get the other stock some day, but I have been waiting for 8 months and I just did not want to wait any more. I can't wait to see how it shoots. If every thing goes well, I will be able to try it out next Saturday at the Ohio Shoot. It weighs 10.6 pounds as it sets.

:) That is a great looking build.  It should serve you well.  Did you have to install pillars and/or bed the Boyd's Stock ?  Thanks ... Jim

Thank You, I think it is rather handsome myself. I have not installed pillars or bedded the action. I would, but this is not the last stock it will reside in. I still have a stock coming from SSS and it comes with 3 pillars and I will bed the action. It is Blue, Blue, light blue laminate. This stock only has two action screws, so that is what I put in it. The action I have has three and I could drill it for the third, but I do not want to do that yet. I will save this stock for a later build and will bed it and put pillars in for that build. I was just getting anxious to get some trigger time with it.

I am in the middle of loading up some Lapua and Winchester brass. I have dummy loads made up for 5 different bullets. I am going to the Graybeard Ohio Shoot Saturday and want to try out a few loads and see how she shoots. I will post some targets, I just do not know how well it will do because I am trying to find a good load and like I said this is not the final stock so I can bed it in. I will more than likely remove the swivel studs, so it will slide in the bags better. I will save them for later of course, they are nice for a field gun, just not so nice for a bench gun.

I had a chance to shoot it last Saturday. It was chilly and breezy 10-15 mph quartering left to right. I was shooting 1" high at 100 yards. I was shooting some single hole groups at 100 so I decided to move back to 200 yds to see what it would do.

The group measured .630". I felt pretty good considering the wind and I was fire forming and doing load development. It felt pretty sweet shooting. I got several positive comments on it's looks and plenty of questions. The load was Laupa brass, Rem 71/2 primer, 50 grain V-Max and H322 powder. The bullet had a .020" jump to the lands. Lots of more work to do, but I like where it is going. I cleaned the barrel once and sent about 100 rounds down range. It seemed to shoot better as I went.

I shot a 1.1" 4 shot group with the Axis at 200 yards, but I think I could do a little better. See my post with the Axis in the Savage area.
