The Possum has passed.  Ole George was no angel, but I really like his music.

Liked him better than Tammy.  He had character.  Even when driving the lawn tractor.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

He gave good concerts, and sang real good, with a good voice.  He was a nice guy when he was sober, and when he was drunk.  He'd let us kids come down and fish off his dock.  He had bottles stashed all around the dock to keep them hid from Tammy.  He and Tammy lived about a mile from our house.  My Girl Friend lived three doors down from George.  They lived on a strip of land that stuck out into the lake, and there was five or six houses there.  While I saw him on a reguler basis, and was in his house many times, I never considered him a close friend, he was a good aquentence.

My senior year of high school, Our band had been invited to the Orange Bowl Parade.  The High School Principal had spent all the funds on a new football stadium, and no money was left for the band to go on the trip.  Johnny Cash, Boots Randolph, and George Jones, got together and scheduled a big concert to raise money for the band to make the trip.  They had kids in the band, so it was of personel interest to them.  They challenged all the singers in the Hendersonville area to come out and participate.  Johnny Cash and George Jones took turns MCing the show.  We collected more than enough to make the trip.  That show was classified as one of the all time great shows ever to happen in the area.  Hank Snow, Billy Walker, Roy Orbison, Loretta, Roy Acuff, Genie Shepard, and scores of other singers came out to help.    The one person conspiciously missing was Tammy, and her son was in the band.

Oldshooter:  Side note, I grew up in Nashville, and Hendersonville, Tennessee.  My Dad played with Bill Monroe, till my mother made him quite.  She said a married man did not need to be messing with such foolishness, he needed to get a job.  So he started driving trucks.  But he kept up with his old friends.  I was forced to go the the Friday Night Opry, from the time I was a toddler till I revolted as a teenager.  The old Ryman had wooden seats, and they got hard.  I usually fell asleep after the first hour.  I grew to hate going to the Opry.

When we moved out of Nashville and to Hendersonville, for a while we lived across the street from Roy Orbison, and he and I became friends.  Yes I was a kid, but he took a liking to me and I spent many hours at his house.  Roy and his wife were always inviting me to stay for dinner, I liked that, I got decent meals there.  (Think they knew I was not eating well at home).  Johnny Cash moved in next door to Roy, and suddenly the owner of the farm house was renting decided to sell.  We moved into a subdivision, not far from George and Tammy, Boots Randolph lived nearby as well.  I dated Linda Randolph for a while, and worked in Boots Carrousel Club as a musician.  Just before leaving for the Air Force, Roy's home burned, and his two boys were inside.  The youngest was taken out by Roy's parents who were taking care of the children while Roy was on tour in Europe.  The older two was down stairs playing with hair spray and matches.  Roy never recovered from that accident.

I'll never forget the first time I saw George Jones.  He came on stage at the Opry and sang "Mountain Dew".  I heard and remembered every word.  He got my attention.
