RCBS bullet seating plug for 45-70 spitzer bullet
« on: May 03, 2013, 07:16:15 PM »
I'm loading up some 300 gr. Barnes spitzer bullets but need a different bullet seating plug. Anyone know where I can get a spitzer seating plug ?

Contact RCBS, they used to make custom seater plugs for a fee if you send them sample bullets. I used Hornady dies which work great for spitzer bullets as they come.

They do have plugs available on their site online, but it's dependent on which sets of dies you have there are two categories, so you might see if there's one I there for your die set.  If not, like Tim said they can make them too.  8)

If you have other die sets see if the nose plug from one of them sets good on your bullet and screws onto/into your seater die.
A temporary modification to your flat nose plug can be made with a hot-glue gun; clean the plug cavity and bullet nose, smear a little cooking oil on the bullet nose, squirt some hot glue into the plug cavity and center up the bullet into it to harden. Same principle as doing epoxy but it will clean out pretty easy if you use several different bullet types.

Thanks Guy's. I just sent RCBS a request for info on getting the proper bullet seating plug. Seems like the .458 is different than all my other dies. The bullet seating plug is for round nose bullets. In the mean time I'll try the Hot Glue trick.

Curious which spitzer from barnes your loading?  I have been thinking about trying the original but haven't took the plunge yet.

I'm using Barnes 300gr. TSX Triple-Shock X bullets. I like the idea of copper bullets. I know most guy's use lead and I have for years to, but after watching some videos of how tiny fragments of lead get mixed with table meat it just put me off. I'm not interested in arguing the lead verse copper thing. That's what I'm using and everyone can use what they like.

The TSX-FB is the spitzer I've shot in my Ultra Hunter, very accurate using Barnes data.  ;)
