Rem Rolling Block Problem
« on: April 18, 2013, 12:09:08 AM »
I have a 7X57 Rolling Block that is a bit over a hundred years old. It is very accurate and fun to shoot. The last time I took it to the range I noticed some of the primers in the spent cartridges had holes in them. Just to be on the safe side I quit shooting the rifle.
Anybody know what the problem may be and how to fix it?

Was  the ammo different from ammo you used in the past?  I'm wondering if maybe the firing pin is long enough for old thick primers and too long for a newer batch?

JL,
Thanks for your reply. I looked a little closer and realized the problem affected cartridges were all the same brand. Also, I saw that the hole doesn't go all the way through the primers. The firing pin had some kind of oxidation crud built up on it, so I cleaned it up.
I don't think there are any signs that would indicate it is dangerous to fire the rifle; do you?

I might note that 7mm RRBs are noted for having oversized chambers which leads (in my gun's case) to indications of headspace problems with some ammo. Mine only likes that produced by an eastern european nation that no longer exists and sold by Hanson.

The rolling blocks in 7x57 are noted for problems.. I'd worry about headspace issues and have the rifle checked. Was the hole enough to allow gas leakage? If so suspect excess pressure and/or headspace issues. I personally believe the 7x57 to hot for the action as made at that time.

You can't go wrong taking a chamber casting, or having it done.  Then you'll know how your headspace looks.  Once you do that it's probably a good idea to load for the rifle.  Have a set of cases that fit and a recipe for a not too snappy load.  A couple dozen pieces of brass and a mold would be plenty.

That's a great idea.. Still check the headspace first for safety..
