Just bought a DPMS A-15 5.56/.223 1/9 twist-16" barrel ?
« on: May 03, 2013, 03:37:01 PM »
FINALLY made up my mind, money driven mostly ;D . Got the DPMS A-15 5.56/.223 1/9 twist and a 16" barrel. The one on display and the one I got, at Gander Mountain, didn't have a sling attachment at the hand guard but had one at the butt stock. Since I'm totally ignorant about ARs , do I have to buy a sling attachment or am I missing something. Figured how to take the upper off so I could clean the barrel. Getting ready to put a Leupold  3 X 9 VX-1 on it. Should I use Miltech grease or oil to lube everything. Thanks, Don

Little lube goes a long way.  Use a little oil on the recoil buffer head and some on the bolt.  Disassemble the bolt and make sure there's a bit on the firing pin and the rotating bolt head shaft.  Reassemble and that's all you need to lube.  ;)

The AR and the M16 are close enough that you can use the field manual for the M16. Maintenance is about half way down the page.

way back in the early 80s when I shot the Soldier of Fortune match there was a Springfield Armory gunsmith working on rifles.  One guy kept asking questions. He had oiled his M1A and it did not function well. The gunsmith said " you grease an M1 and M1A".
The guy said "yeah, I keep hearing that". The gunsmith said "well, are you finally getting it?".

He went on to say, 'you grease the M1/M1A action, you oil the M16/AR15. Don't confuse the two'.  I have ever since not confused the two. Not that I ever did.
