Making a Custom Walnut Mannlicher Stock Project - W/ Pics

I am starting a thread to show how I do it. Right or Wrong. Pointers will be welcome. Anyway, We were cleaning out an old barn and found some rough sawn lumber in the loft.. The lady who now owns the property said her Dad had an old walnut grove cut down sometime in the 70's and had the lumber stored. Her Dad has since passed away and she wants the barn cleaned out for deomoliton and eventual sale of the property. There was one 6 foot length that is about 2 to 2 1/2 inches thick. The board is so dirty and covered in dust I had no idea what it would look like. So I spent a little time with a hand planer and block sander to see what lied beneath the crud. It turns out it is a nice chunk of sawed walnut. Nothing spectacular, but nice enough to make some nice stock sets. I should get a couple of complete stocks out of it and some end and grip cap blocks to boot. I'll post some pics of the partially cleaned up lumber and show progress. The 8mm Mauser will wear one of em some day. Mannlicher I should think with a ebony grip cap.

NICE FIND!!  Its a TON of work, but usually reward is a beautiful stock!!

Post pics I for one, will enjoy the progress!!

I would like to see this project too.  I once was given a piece of walnut about 10 by 12 inches and 1/2 inch thick.  I remember making two sets of pistol grips out of them.  One for an old Star .45 ACP and another set for a S&W 39.  Both were super simple since the back side was flat but they were a great looking set of grips.

Here is some pics after a little clean up and planing. board measure 85x6x2. Not much room for error, but I should be ok for 2 piece Handi stocks.

keep us posted. i cut two blanks out of walnut last weekend myself. plan on making my first handi stock from scratch.

I had a little time in between the Honey-Do list items to get some work done on the stock blanks. I decided to cut them into working blocks. I took my template from a laminate MC and Sterling thumbhole stock. I have enough wood to do 1 MC and 2 thumbholes. Maybe enough for a 2nd MC, but will have to see how bad the checking is on one of the end blocks. I will have enough to do 3 22 to 24 inch mannlicher fore ends and at lease one or two regular length forends. The rest of the scrap will be end and grip caps for future projects.
I just traced the outline and then cut the blocks. I plan on using a dremel tool instead of my hand rasp this time to do my rough shaping to speed up the process a bit. Then I will block sand with 40 grit shaping paper to tune the shape I want. I plan on barrowing heavily from one of the threads showing how to do the buttstock inletting for both the MC and thumbhole. All buttstocks will wear one inch thick soft recoil pads. I plan on one going to the 8mm mauser. 1 will go to my future 30-06 or 35 Whelen and the final one will go to my next rebore project. I have not decided yet, but I am leaning heavily towards a 6.5x55 or 7x57 mauser.
