model should I look for?? I'll be hunting whitetail deer mostly with the occasional Mule deer and hog--looking for one in 25 06

I kinda like the sporter 'cause they have the open sites in case my scope fails I'll still be able to hunt...

what do you think

At the moment I have three(more coming). Two are No. 1 B's, 1 in .22 Hornet(favorite fun gun) and 1 in .25-06. My third is a No. 1 H that started out as a .375 H&H a guy had that he had the barrel shortened to 19" then hated the rifle. I stuck a Shilen barrel on it and chambered it for the .450 Marlin. I don't think you could go wrong with a No. 1 B in .25-06 for your uses. Lawdog

I now have seven #1s in my small collection -- five Bs, an H, and an S that has a custom stock with a B foreend so it is really a S/B.

I hunt with all of them and only use open sights as a backup on my .45-70 and .375 H&H. (I think of my .25-06 as a long distance rifle and have no use for iron sights in that application.)

I prefer the look and feel of the B style and do not mind the weight. In fact I prefer more weight than less as it cuts down barrel wobble.

My B in .25-06 is very accurate after being accurized by Broad Creek Rifle Works. But it does not like 120 gr loada as much as the lighter ones. Your mileage may vary.

I have 4 o5 of the #1.s and have both kinds the 1-b and I believe the 1-a.
it is simply a matter of chioce....I like both styles and if I am worried about my scope, I take 2 rifles.....in fact I always take a second rifle along just in case as one never knows.....the 2 rifles I have with sights are a 45-70 and a 30-06....there are two that vcome with sights, the light sporter(22") barrel and the I blievbe medium sporterwith a 24 or 26 inch of that I am not sure...I like the light sporter as the length is just about the size of a 30-30 lever action, all with a 22 inch tube....the funny thing is and I know it is in my head,as I think they both weigh about the same but towards the end of the week when my B--- is almost touching the ground I always carry my light sported as it seems alot lighter.....hahaha..
so the choice is up to you.....just my thoughts.....Rob(ww1)

I only have one Ruger #1. :cry: But I still love it. It's a 1978 vintage in .45-70, and yes I DO shoot it a lot!

Thanks guys! No, I didn't make the case. The gun, case, and all accessories are a Ruger factory itme, special run in 1978. This set was commissioned by Lyman for their 100th anniversary.
I generally hate commemoratives, as they are usually gawdy, with tons of brass or gold. I fell in love with this one as soon as I saw it, and was able to trade an old Ballard #2 in .38 cf/rf for it. (One of my better trades!) It's very subtle for a commemorative, with only the sides of the receiver engraved.
The case that Ruger made for this set is really overkill! The darn thing weighs in at about 75 lbs.! (more with the gun in it!)
I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe they made 1,000 like this, and another 500 that were more deluxe, with the gold inlays, etc.

Marlinman93: A number 1 such as yours is a dream of mine. I don't think there is a much better platform for a presentation gun than a Ruger #1. What a beauty! Maybe someday... .

Thanks Mauser! I don't know what happened to all of these? I remember wanting one when they came out, but couldn't afford one. This is the only one I've ever seen (in person) since. I saw one of them on the auction sites once.
The Ruger #1 is a classic design, and as you mentioned, the receiver lends itself well to a presentation format. The only gripe I have ever had, (and still have) is the dumb looking forearm. Wish they would have made it with a regular schnabel forearm tip, like an old 1885 Winchester, Ballard, or Rolling Block. I never have been able to figure out what that stupid groove is for, on the #1's forearm?

hi Marlinman.....seems to me I read someplace once that the groove was for crossed shooting sticks...a little bit ago some sent me pictures of how he modified the forend to look nicer....it did look nice as it was slimmer than the forends on the #1b.....as I say it looks great and if I can ever out bid some of the others on eBay and such places I will give it a try....just dont want to modify the one that came with my rifle...wish I had a scanner I would scan them and send to you....maybe I can do the same with a digital camera....will try......just my thoughts.......WW1
