GOLF
« on: May 09, 2013, 01:02:10 AM »
If you are wondering why the hell this subject should appear on a gun stop I can give no good reason---except I do enjoy Golf and have for 55 years or so---almost as long as I have enjoyed guns.
Actually it is just a blog of musings from an old man with early morning thoughts and a pot of coffee---if it is not your cup of tea, just pass on.
I like projects---actually they drive the HEN nuts and that is part of the plan---and as some of you may know, I do things to guns as well---just projects for my own enjoyment--as well as driving the Hen nuts.
I have long worked on golf clubs--doing things to them--trying to build a game without much practice or skills---thinking the perfect club will give me a better game.
Lately I have had rather extreme thoughts of grandeur. I am, currently, thinking that swingweight is the real secret to my lack of skills.
To experiment I have chosen a set of Mizuno MP 52's as the test of my thoughts.
I just got thru--last fall--of putting 1/2" extensions in this set to increase distance---of which I have none---and found this to be less than desirable.
SOOOO- I am removing the extensions and am going to bring the swing weight down to D-0's from the manufacturers D-3 specs.
I can do this one of two--well, three ways. The third way is a process of grinding and replateing---which would be a fun project, but, it is just to costly, time consuming and well, just too complicated.
Thank God for Maltby golfworks---they have been my go to supplier of golf stuff for years.
I have removed the grips from the irons and will begin the process of calulateing how much weight I need to add to the butt of the shafts of each club to remove weight from the heads.
I used to do this by sanding a cork down to fit inside the shaft of the club, buy a box of shotgun shells and use the lead shot as the counter weight---worked good.
Now I will us powered lead and tungsten to do this---it takes time and trial and effort to get each club to balance to the same headweight--but it is a fun process-and-as I said it drives the wife nuts.
We had this conversation last evening after UPS delivered the materials I had ordered from Maltby. She asked me what the hell I was doing now. Now I thought this was a good question and a decent conversation we could have. I began explaining what i was doing---much as I am doing here--and she abruptly interrupts my explanation---something you guys can't do  ;) ---to ask me what is this going to cost.
I thought this to be an unreasonable question, not to mention, off topic---I mean what does cost have to do with a project ?---I digress, and the conversation left us at odds and her walking out of the room to get some asprin.
See--now I have acccomplished one of my goals and it didn't cost me a dime.
I WILL report back when I have finished this project as I am sure ya'll are about as interested at the results as she is.
Blessings

Good luck. I have walked many a course with clubs wouldn't call it playing . If it wasn't for the 7 stroke rule I would only stop at dark. I have heard it is called golf because all the better 4 letter words were taken. I even have a 1 iron . Can you hit a 1 iron ?
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I USED to could hit a one iron---that was along time ago.
I used to think I had a pretty good game. I once--when I was in my early 20's--considered turning pro. I went to a well know local teaching pro for advice. He suggested I hit some balls for him to see where we needed to start.
After hitting balls for about 30 minutes i asked him what he thought ?
He did not pause for one minute to consider his response---Son--he said without a smile--don't take that swing out of town.

Ah yes golf... an otherwise pleasant walk on beautifully manicured lawns ruined by a little white ball.  ;)

I love golf. It keeps a lot of people off the lakes and rivers, and out of the woods. More hunting and fishing for me! MwaHaHa!

I can see the physical benefits of a morning walk, I don't need a ball to go on my morning walk.  :o never understood the attraction of playing golf. But I'm thrilled you enjoy it.  ;)

Having considered golf I have come to final conclusions. Only idiots and the masochistic type play golf. I seem to be a mixture of the two--in extremes.

I put considerable effort and a bit of money over the last 5 years to catch up to my brother and stepfathers skill level. Was really just trying to find something in common to enjoy with them as i am the odd duck in the family.
I found that the majority of my time on the course was taken up with fantasies of fishing the beautiful lakes, hunting the edges of the greens and Oh My Gosh look at the 500 yards i could target shoot on! Realized i'm just not a golfer, however the game DID play a part in me figuring out just who i am, and am not. J

My shafts have run the gamut from tipped stiff to the present day wet spaghetti.
I use 4.0 Rifle shafts but I cut the ball because I could never contain the hook.
If it is a new Idea I am the sucker they are looking for.
For those interested I play between a 7 and 11 handi-cap these days---not so often as low as a 7 anymore--but stuff happens some days.

I hate golf....................It ruins a lot of good wildlife habitat..........................MwaHaHa
Our golf course just flooded making lots of nice water hazards throughout the course.  I told the course manager that the flooding was a vast improvement toward course diffculty and they should dam up some of the flooded areas to keep it that way. His response was that the members wouldn't like it becuase it would affect their scores...............WTH..........

Ah golf!  Played it for years, sometimes daily, Wasn't too bad. Could hit it 300yds.........150 down range and usually 150 to right or left.   ::)

A guy once tried teach a gorilla to play golf. He could reach the green in one. then approach the ball with a putter and return the ball to the Tee in one.

An injury ended my career as an amateur golfer. My old Dad loved the Game, I couldn't get him to a golf course to save my life. I asked him why once, He said " I might find out how bad I am at it!" He only hit practice balls into the woods and river. He loved watching it on TV.

I can't play the back tee's anymore--I moved up front. We have a group of about 50 or 60 guys that play every monday and Wednesday---our handi-cap system is simple. We keep a running score and average out the last ten rounds.
Then there is the two bit game every day at noon. Usually get 10 0r 12 guys out for that. Two bits on a LOT of trash bets from sandies to pars--the score keeping is a booger. Then there are the indies and teams.
We used to play--in the day as some would say--a game during the week where we might have 20 guys---the scores were kept by a runner on a legal yellow pad---bets were not much but a whole bunch of $5 dollar bets in 1970 money colud add up.
Thyere was one guy who just loved to loose--he could loose a paycheck just to get into the game. There was always one of those guys.
Used to play the BBQ circuit during the summers--All thru East Texas courses from munies to CC's would have these Calcutta's. Had to watch who was involved. Some guys would bring in ringers--College players and the bidding could get steep. played in one in Carthage when a guy brought in a young man and won a bunch of money on him. He was sophmore from UT, it turns out, Ben Crenshaw
Lordy those were some fun days.

I don't play often enough and only play for fun so I never actually bothered to figure my handicap.  However if I did the number would probably more closely resemble a speed limit than a golf handicap.  ;)

When i was just learning the game i was playing with an elderly gent who helped me a lot then. I sliced the ball into the woods and we went to find it. I saw it, and about thirty yards in front and toward the green stood two tall pines about 20 yards apart. So I said" if i hit it between those trees I can get to the green in two. The old guy looked at me with a pained expression and said " If you could hit it between those two trees, you wouldn't be in the woods right now! So I punched out to the fairway and then went to the green laying three.

I went out to a local coarse with some guys I work with bout 20 years ago. I used a set of clubs my brother bought at a flee market for 25 bucks. Had fun, but never gained interest in the game to take it up, and still don't have any interest. One never knows though if they might gain interest in golfing, because a guy I know that I coached youth baseball with always would say things like "those guys that golf are nuts. They hit a ball go chase it, then hit it again". After he retired from work, he is always on a golf coarse.

Folks who never develop an interest in golf have good sense. It is a life of continual search and no ground gained.
Folks, I admit I am an idiot---but it sure keeps this idiot off the streets and away from civilized folk.
