300 whisper round
« on: May 02, 2013, 11:36:16 AM »
Saw an AR that was marked 300 whisper. Ask salesman "what is a 300 whisper". Not sure if he didn't know or I didn't understand so what is a 300 whisper. What case and bullet does it use. Thanks, Don

The original 300 Whisper was based off of the 221 Fireball case. There are folks calling the 223 necked up to 30 caliber a 300 Whisper as well. The original was designed back in the 90's by SSK Industries. It fires a 200+gr bullet at subsonic velocities or you can drop down to a 125 gr bullet at about 2400'ps, or about the same HP as a 30-30 or 7.62x39. I'm not a fan but understand a lot of folks like to play with something odd. If subsonic is the goal, you can buy subsonic ammo all day long for a 308 from various makers. It's well tuned for the 308 and twist rates. The Gov't gets theirs from TTI using a 170gr bullet. Accuracy is amazing considering. With a muffler on the end of the barrel, the TTI ammo makes zero noise. All you hear is the firing pin drop. Obviously, trajectory is an issue if you've never shot it before.

An additional fact regarding the 300 Whisper, as well as the other cartridges in J.D. Jones "Whisper" series is that they are meant to be fired through  fast twist barrels, 1-8" rifling.
That may be the case with other 30 cal subsonics also.
The intention is to load the cartridge with heavy for caliber bullets - MKBTHPs/VLDs - so as to retain as much velocity as possible over the long haul.
A 220 grain BTHP will start out at just over 1000 fps. At 400 yards, it has 90% retained velocity. At 1000 yards it will still have 80%.

Huge plus for the 300 whisper and it's clones, (300 Fireball, 300 Blackout, 300-221) is that with the right powder, they cycle just fine in AR15 style rifles shooting sub-sonic rounds.  I shoot a 300 blackout Noveske AR with a suppressor.  Sure makes hunting whitetails in VA suburbia a quiet undertaking.  My neighbors are constantly asking me to come over and help with their deer problems which I am happy to do.
