Removing stock on handi-rifle ??? HELP
« on: May 10, 2013, 09:02:26 AM »
I tried to search and it said no search allowed on this forum . What the heck !

I bought a Youth Composite Stock for my 25-06 NEF Handi-rifle . I removed the pad and looked down the drilled out hole on the rifle . No slot for a screw driver so I tried putting different sockets in ( SAE and Metric ) . No good . How the heck does one remove the wooden stock on one of these ?

it should be a 9/16 hex head bolt, but you will need a really thin walled socket with a long extension. i use a 1/4inch drive thin walled deep 9/16 socket for mine. if you can't find one thin enough buy a cheap one and take it to the grinder thinning it down till it fits.

look down the hole with a light first and make sure of the size!

I ground down a 9/16" socket from one of the old cheap sets and it worked like a charm . Thanks again . I have the composite stock on now .

And yes , I moved the scope foreward .

be careful jamming a socket down there

if you don't have clearance, you can get one stuck down there.....  (ask me how I know)

I was lucky I hadn't reached the bolt head, and was able to make a hook from a "Wire Cothes Hanger" to hook it out!

I have an extention that locks the socket. I too have lost sockets in the stock, it is really a pain. I have a 12 and 18 in extention on my bench with a t-handle, have found sometimes get a twist using a normal socket driver.

FYI
For those folks that have the slot screw head bolt, you can go to Sears and they sell a L-O-N-G Craftsman screwdriver that works like a charm.    I bought mine originally to remove a .303 Brit. stock.   Works like a charm on both the .303 and my old Talo 12 ga.

I bought some Alan head stock bolts from McMastercar to replace the hex head bolt.  They're a bit expensive but I think they were worth it.

Dont forget, once you get that hex head bolt out you can slot it with a hacksaw and have the best of both worlds.
If using a slot and screwdriver DO NOT get the screwdriver wedged between the head and sock wood thinking you are in the slot. A twist and you can pop the side of the stock out :o , the wood is thin there.
