Opinion leather buttstock cheekrest for scopes. suggestions.

I have a scoped rifle that has a buttstock that is about 1/4 to 3/8 inch too low for the scope I have installed. I have the lowest set of rings I could find so I can't lower it any further. What do you suggest for a leather buttstock cover with a cheekrest? Do they last? Do they maintain their alignment? Care of leather? Ammo carrier yes or no? Does it damage the wood? Who makes a nice one? I would like to stick with American made products on this one. Just my hang up.

Search ebay and google for your specific needs.  They are out there to be had - once you peruse enough of them it simply becomes a matter of style preference.


With regard to maintenance and the affect one might have on your furniture, it's all a matter of keeping them clean, properly oiled, (I prefer Montana Sling's leather conditioner on all of my gun leather), and periodically checking for any issues that might arise.  Typically there is very little adverse reaction to wood and wood finishes.  Leather and wood seem to go together.  Leather and steel is a completely different matter.  Those two do not mix well over time.

  They work great.


  Get a comb riser, not a cheekpad.


  Get one with the darkest brown leather and eyelettes that you can.  They really blend well with the rifle.


  Do not tie it on with a rawhide thongs.  Looks dumb, gives a thick seam, and hangs down too much.


  Use a dark brown shoe lace.  Tight in on tight, just like a shoe, and make sure that the sling post of the butt stock sticks up through the last two sets of grommets, so that your tying knot is on the back side of the sling post.


   If you do all of this, it will stay on tight, and won't slide forward, backward or around.  As the leather ages, it will dry somewhat, and get even tighter.


   I had two, that stayed on the rifles for years, with no adverse effect upon the wooden stock.  I did not oil the pads, as they only rarely got wet and weren't out in the scorching sun.

After doing a liitle research I found an outfit out of Idaho Levergun Leather Works that looks like exactly what I had in mind. It ain't cheap, but from the look of the work they have displayed it looks worth it. Anyone have any thing good or bad to say. A Matching sling and maybe even a case/scabbard looks appealing too. Might want to start saving up some money though. This could get expensive quick.
