Lost a friend Friday, found out about it today

The miner who always had a bunk and a good meal for me every time I went into the Alaska Range hunting or just puttering around, got killed Friday.  He was a salty old guy, rough and hard for some people to take.  Every fifth word started with F, but under that rough exterior he had a heart of gold.  Speaking of Gold, two years ago I hauled out over 2000 lbs of what he called Black Sand (gold bearing sand).  As heavy as those little containers were they did not contain much sand.  Anyway Don got killed when his Catapiller Dozer (the paper says it was a D-6, I say it was a D-9) fell through the ice of a lake.  It does not say it in the paper, but I know what he was doing.  I've freighted in with him too many times and know his habits and ways.  He builds a bridge of snow across lakes and rivers then runs the equipment across.  I'm sure he was pushing snow out onto the lake to build the snow bridge.  Don was the one that asked me to kill a Moose for him three years ago when all I had was varmit loads for my 30-06.  He kept a .50BMG loaded on the front porch of the cabin.  Grizzly medicine.

Sorry for your loss, Alaska is much poorer for his passing.  Had a couple friends like that pass in the passed few years, always leaves a hole.

At least Don was doing what he loved best, Operating Equipment.  He did not need to work, he made a killing off that mine.  He retired a couple of years ago and moved to Hawaii.  Got tired of all the people and came back to Alaska.  Took thids job just to be doing something.
