Dixie Gun Works Tenn Mountain Rifle any good?

Hi guys ,

   I am looking for a decent non custom flintlock, and need inputs to anyone who has, or has used the Dixie Tenn Mountain rifle .50.  I would like to get into re-enacting the early mountain frontier of Virginia (post Revolution), and of course use it for hunting.  Would you recomment it?
   I currently own a Lyman Great Plains Rifle (For 10 years) in .54 and is VERY accurate.  Got a few deer with it as well.  But,  I want to get into an earlier time period, as well the challenge of using the flintlock.  History and guns go hand in hand.  I am sure you all know what I mean!  So...thumbs up or thumbs dow boys?

Are you talking about the "poorboy" -- all steel furniture and no nose cap?

They were great guns. The problem is finding one, since Dixie doesn't appear to make them any more.

Yes, I have one of Dixie's poor boy mountain rifles in .32. Bought it the first year they made them. Through the years, its never given me a bit of trouble, and it's a good shooter. In short, I'd never part with it. The new Dixie catalog shows the finished rifles in left hand only. Maybe give them a call and ask if they still have any right handers. As an alternative, the Pedersoli frontier rifle they sell is real good quality, and the styling is right.

I love this rifle.
I built one from the kit, .50 percussion.
Mine is the "rich boy" model because I put a German silver patch box on it. Dixie catalog says the grease hole is authentic, but I didn't like the looks of it.
It is too bad if they are no longer made, it is a great rifle. I have killed 5 deer and 3 hogs with mine.

The current Dixe Catalog shows they still make the Tenn Mountain Rifle (Poor Boy-with browned barrel and furniture).  I does show both precussion and flint in just left hand model.  I think it's a misprint.  I will call them after I get some more responses on the particular rifle.  I want one in flint .50 cal.  I would love more responses on the flint .50 cal.  Help me out boys! :shock:

I had one of these back when I could not afford what I have now, the frizzen was a piece of excrement and I ended up converting it to percussion and later selling it

they may have improved them over the last 15 years but I wouldn't buy a flinter with out trying it. the percussion worked fine but I eventually wanted a more period correct gun

you might try having the frizzen resoled on one of these if your heart is set on it

I hunted with a .50 Cal. Dixie Arms Tenn Mountain Rifle when I lived in PA, took 4 deer with it, very accurate, after I got use to the flash.  

I had the Flint tuned/worked by a guy in Endicott NY, after that it was great.

Not a big fan of flinters, love a Cap & Ball.

When I sold her I got a lot more than $400 for her.

Yeah that post reminds me they were made in Japan. I got a Jap curly cherry stock, it is beautiful.
When I took that kit from the box, I saw where it said "Made in Japan" on the flat, where it would be visible when the gun was completed.
Those words didn't last 5 minutes. I got a file and exorcised them right away. I would be damned if I was gonna sit in the deer stand getting into my "Davy Crockett" mood, and look down to my beautiful rifle and read "Made in Japan". That rifle would have turned into a samauri sword before my very eyes! When I pulled the trigger, rice would have sprayed from the barrel.
I didn't like it, but I could handle it, that it was made there, but didn't  want to read it again.
