How are the 22 & 24 cal H&Rs doing

  Since the Remlin takeover of  H&R, I have heard some problems with certain  models, so I have been hesitant to buy new H&R stuff.  If  certain calibers are still good, I may be dipping my toes into H&R waters again.
  How are the .22 hornet and .243 barrels doing  now?  Matter of fact..how are the 30/30s doing?

I can't tell you anything about the Hornet, but I can tell you about the .223, .22-250 and the .243.

I had a standard contour .223 that I sold and replaced with a new 1 in 9 Superlight. 

I bought a used .22-250 that wouldn't keep bullets in a pie plate at 100 yards.  I sent it up to Illion and it came back with a new barrel.

I liked my Superlight 7mm-08 and .223 so much I sent a frame in for a Superlight .243

All three of these rifles shoot inside three inches at 300 yards.  That's if wobbly, blind, Old Fart does his part.  If my bride is on the trigger, they do it all the time. ::) :-[

The day before yesterday, a "chuck" made the mistake of sticking his head out of his hole for a look around.  325 to 350 off the back porch.  A .22-250 52 gr. Hornady BTHP launched from the top of the grill enclosure ruined his day.....I'd say it was a mind altering experience. :o

I am having the same concerns with purchasing a new rifle. Used ones are a little hard to come by in my area, especially in the 30-30 caliber I want haha... I have been hearing really bad things about the Remlin 336 levers and am a little scared of new Remingsons SB2s... but if they are making good on firearms being sent in, there really isn't much to lose other then a few bucks shipping, if that.

I've got a .243 HB Handi, and once I got the barrel shortened to 20", it works great. It's only a couple of months old, and with the only ammo I can find for it, it shoots about 1.125 inch groups. The ammo is W-W 100 gr. Powerpoints. Hopefully, sometime down the road, I can find some other ammo that will shrink my groups. So far, it's a good gun. However, I would prefer it be a ejector rather extractor. I'm pleased with it, especially for the price.

I have new version CBA Hornets, .223's, .243's and .30/30's... And I cannot report any problems with mine. Thay all shoot real good and fit and finish is nice also... On a recent shopping trip, I did note a number of consistent issues; misaligned barrel lug holes with screws counter sunk under the wood grain, off-center forearm spacers, in consistent gaps in forearm/barrel spacing, poor fitment of recoil pads, and excessive proud wood at receiver juncture (more than usual)... On the upside, I consider these minor issues... On a major issue, namely trigger function, the new triggers seem lighter and crisper... Which seems a good trade-off.

I like my CBA receiver.  The 1:9 .223 barrel is a shooter with ammo I've shot in it.  At least good enough for 300 yard shots at chucks.  I just got an email from Remington and it should be back with the acc barrels (.357 & 30-30) by weeks end.  I can barely wait to get out and shoot them.

I have owned five H&R/NEF 30-30 rifles. I still have three. All shoot very good, one is incredible. If I could only keep one Handi rifle, it would be a 30-30. However, I hope I never have to only keep one Handi. I have had several 22 Hornets. Shoot pretty darn good. I just never could find the time and patience to load those little cartridges so I sold the barrels. I would buy another. My experiences with the Handi 243 have been a little challenging. I have had many. I only want to use them for hogs and deer so I load the heavier bullets. I have yet to find one that can shoot well enough to keep. It is me and my picky loads that are the problem not the guns. It is also fun to keep trying. I'll get it one day.

dont own the hornet but my 223 and 3030 are 3/4 minute rifles


i use a 180 gr home cast fn in front of 16.5 gr 4895 in the 3030 and it is fantastic


i use 55 gr win sp in front of 25.5 gr imr 4895 and it is great also

Remington has been making guns a long time, they know how to make a barrel. I think the Remington made H&R's are as good as ever. The problem they had with the Marlins is because they moved the plant, got rid of all the Marlin employees and got new ones and changed the manufacturing process to "assembly cells"to speed things up. As they found out, it didn't work and now Marlin's reputation has been badly damaged. I have several Handi-rifles from before and after Remington took over and I like them all.
