.45LC, .454 Casull, .410; My dream barrel...

I used to have a Raging Bull that shot .454 Casull and .45LC; I also used to have an Alaskan survival model American derringer that shot .410 and .45LC in top barrel and 45-70 in the bottom. I could fit a 454 round in the top barrel    but never tried to fire it. If I wanted to use one barrel for 45LC, .410, and 454 Casull, what would you start with? I'm thinking the 44 mag, but then again if I'm reaming a new chamber and re-boring maybe a heavy barrel 308, is this idea even feasible? Or am I dreaming?

I'm not sure if the .410 would work and retain any accuracy in the shorter calibers. I would start with a 45LC barrel and ream it to .454 Casull. If you still needed more power, ream to .460 S&W.

 Having a gun that can shoot 45 Long Colt, 454 Casull and 460 S&W would be very useful and cool. I don’t have the knowledge and experience that many of you have on this forum and what you read in a book sometimes does not hold water in the real world. From what I have read the  ,  454 Casull and 460 S&W  operate at a higher or close to same pressure  as the 500 S&W . I know the SB2 frame can handle it. Is there an H&R 45 Long colt barrel that can be safely reamed to 460 S&W to handle loads from a common  reloading manual?

Yes, barrels as used on the Classic Carbines have been successfully rechambered to those calibers.

is there a source for after market or custom barrels? I know there is not a .45LC option in the H&R Barrel Accessory Program.

The only factory 45 Colt accessory barrel available is the 45-410 Survivor barrel which isn't suitable for the 454/460, best option is to find a BC Carbine or barrel for sale, they sell for a premium when you can find them tho. Rebores or stubs are the only options for custom barrels, I've had several rebores done by both Oregunsmithing and JES.

Pete, the Heretic, speaking:  You can't accurately shoot shot out of a rifle barrel or a bullet out of a shotgun barrel.  Now, if you want 20 yard performance, go for it.  My answer was a Savage 24V, .357 reamed to Max over 20 ga. and cut to 18 inches, and threaded for choke tubes.  Now, you have an effective shotgun and an accurate rifle.  I love Handis and own lots, but I wouldn't have a .45/.410 if they gave them free with Cracker Jacks..  I can't believe they cancelled the B.C. Carbine and kept that abomination. JMHO.  gendoc and other folks in the South find them useful for snakes and Hogs, etc.....I have neither here, so it is useless to me.

How about this: get a 44Mag and a swap barrel (or, better yet, whole gun) .410, or better still a 20ga.; a two gun soft or hard case would hold both and either be ready at a moment's notice.

I don't mean to sound wise azzed about this, but by the time you sort out your barrels, I'd have grabbed the loaded Handi or Pardner and had the job done with the critter sizzling in the pan.  Tell me anything is gonna stand around long enough for you to swap barrels.  It sounds great in theory, but doesn't work here.  Punching holes in paper is a different story.  The paper will wait for you to catch up.

Most 410 factory slugs are underbore size (less than .41")  soft lead and hollow base so they bump up in a smoothbore and will swage down going through the choke of a shotgun barrel.  Shooting these slugs in a 45LC/454Cas barrel is asking them to expand another 40 plus thousands which may or may not happen.  I have shot factory 410 slugs (remingtons) in a 44cal rifle barrel and had fairly decent accuracy to about 50 yards.  I have not tried them in a 45 cal rifle barrel.
Unless you need to shot 410 slugs to be legal, say hunting deer in Ohio,  I think it would be cheaper to shoot 45LC.  Last box of 5 Remington 410 slugs I saw was going for $7.95.
