Does anyone cast 22 cal bullets?
« on: May 14, 2013, 05:26:50 AM »
I've thought about casting for the 22 hornet and don't know if it would be worth the hassle or expense to get the mold, sizing die, top punch, lyman m die, gas checks.

Anybody casting 22 cal bullets for any other 22 cal rifles?

Thank you,

Personally no, but I shoot some Beartooth  .224" 45 gr. bullets in my .223. A bunch of fellers over at Castboolits.com cast and shoot lead for .22 caliber rifles.

Worth it? Heck yeah!

I've got a large coffee can of cast .227 gas checked bullets at 45 gr.  We used them to train the younger ones with to save some money.  We've pushed them pretty fast, but not like we would jacketed.  In a hornet, they would do fine.

If you shoot enough, it would be worth the investment.

35, 37, 44, 50, 55 & 62gr., so yeah, I'd say it's worth it.  Get a quality mould and preferably more than a two cavity if you can.  It makes the time spent casting all the more worthwhile.

Ok guys.  I'm going to bite the bullet on these ;)   Hopefully we'll be able buy the brass, primers and powder again soon instead of looking at empty shelves >:(

Czech_too, Where do you get 4 cavity 22 molds?

Thanks for the replies!

I have a handfull of moulds from this individual, wouldn't hesitate to buy another...

While I don't have any moulds from this outfit, I feel the same way.

Something else to consider it signing up onto the Cast Boolit forum, if you haven't already and go down to the Boolit Exchange.  Maybe try a few different boolits out beforehand and then get 'the' mould which works best for you.

I shoot cast in everything I own. As for the 22s- 22 Hornet, 221, 222, and 223. The Hornet has its own M die the others use the 22 short. The 22s take a little bit of playing around to see what works but they will all shoot cast pretty good. There is a group buy closing right now at Cast Boolits for the Noe 225107 which works good in the Hornet.

I just tried to call NOE and they are out of the office. Is that NOE 225107 a flat base mold?  I did not see how to get in on that group buy.  How much are the molds and how much do you save?

Thank you,

You'll enjoy shooting cast .22  -- don't overlook the Midsouth LEE .22 mold for  $20 when they are in stock.

I hope that Ranchdog
does a run of 50 gr again, I missed out..

My NOE 70 gr was a bit under $90 shipped and worth it  .
