BLACK POWDER SUBJECT TO BACKGROUND CHECKS!

Now that I have your attention, I just got an email from the NMLRA that Senator Lautenberg (D, NJ) wants to add an amendment to legislation already in the mill to require criminal background checks for the purchase of black powder, black powder substitutes and smokeless powder of ANY quantity.  The "Explosive Materials Background Check Act."  Best start contacting your congressmen and senators!

I'm feeling like ordering 25# of the holy black from Maine Powder House real soon....

I felt this one was coming and actually figured it would start with releasing the news of the propellent used in the Boston Marathon explosives. That this coincedently occurs right when this new bill is to be introduced surprises me not in the least bit.  J :D

Truth is one congressmen can't just walk into the house or senate floor with a bill in his hands and ask for a vote.
One congressmen screaming the sky is falling happens near daily and nothing happens.

Gee, Really? You and every other guy out there, and that'll create a shortage so everyone else that can't get any will feed the rumor more.
Powder makers already can't keep up with the mad dash being made since January. If you haven't been around for awhile there already isn't much powder to be had.

They haven't yet. It's all media/pundit speculation. That's another current myth being spread around the BP forums.

Uh....no......by definition black powder IS a low explosive. Unlike smokeless, which burns at differing rates when confined, BP actually "burns" at basically the same rate whether it is confined or not.

Try making a small pile of smokeless and ignite it....then try making a small pile of BP and ignite it. You will quickly see the difference. If you have some pyrodex try it with that too and you will see why Pyrodex is not under the same restrictions as BP. It is harder to ignite and it burns slower when unconfined.

Irrespective of that, I would hate to see a rush on BP by hoarders! BP supplies are about the only thing not in short supply in the shooting world these days. I personally have all the BP I will probably need for the rest of my life (unless I get back into doing the CAS thing again).

yep if they pass that law more people will be making there own black powder u tube shows you how but i wouldn't unless i couldn't buy it. >:(

Been makin my own for several years now. Cost about $2 a lb. and is about 80% as strong as Goex FF black.....

the amish around are rushing to buy pessure cookers for the summer and fall canning bee,s. as they have no photo,s id,s, they are worried thay will not be able to resupply if theirs wear out. eastbank.

Winterhawk, when the folks in D.C. start trying to pass bills to classify muzzleloaders as firearms and call for registration, the availablity of powder will be the least of our worries. Most of the anti gun people arent aware of or havent addressed the fact that black powder guns are not classified as firearms.  A 9 shot Lamat cap n ball revolver in .42/16 ga. will kill as quick as a Ruger Black Hawk in .44 Mag. When this 'loophole' is brought to the attention of the non shooting public and the anti gun no nothings,  I fear we will have trouble. A bill aimed at muzzleloaders may easily pass. The NRA and other gun lobbies may sacrifice a bill like this to apease the administration. We (muzzleloader people) dont have much in the way of lobbyist and our voices dont have much clout. I've been waiting on this to happen for many years. In the present frenzy for gun control measures, the time may be soon. My pennies worth.....RamblinMan

I hear you!  I see articles in the paper every so often about felons out hunting and the author is surprised and shocked that they can do so with a ML.  In fact, a number of years ago it was a big national expose that some ex-con in Montana was able to get a hunting license.  If that didn't kick up a fuss!

Did you see the latest Backwoodsman magazine?  Article on making your own B.P.  Oh, Lautenberg's bill would make it illegal to make your own also.  Not that it will stop a terrorist from doing so.  He has been trying mighty hard to get guns away from us, this is just another back door try to make it harder to use one.

Just found out the other day that the Post Office last year changed their regulations and you can't mail M/L handguns anymore.  It might be an antique or a replica of one, but if it meats the criteria for handgun it can't go through the mail.  Which makes no sense since it can go UPS or FedEx....

My father in law grew up in the Nebraska sand hills. He was born in 1900. When my wife and I were dating after she went to bed I would get him to tell me stories about his cowboy days. One of his stories was about baking black powder in a oven in the sod house he was raised in. They used buffalo chips as a fuel source.

Guess I should a paid more attention to how he made it.  ;D
