QUESTION FROM AN IDIOT
« on: April 28, 2013, 05:08:21 AM »
My moniter has started going black for just a second or two from time to time then, it comes back.
Usually happens when signing on --- sometimes it happens when nothing else is going on.
Is this moniter trying to tell me something or is it the computer.
The moniter is 3 or 4 years old !

Is it just on this site? The last couple weeks i have had more problems here than any other site. Monitor goes blank. Computer locks up. Sometimes it tells me i can't access the site. Don't have any idea what the problem is.

There was the forbidden thing going on for a while but Bill said Matt fixed that and mine is doing fine now. Never seen that blank Moniter thang. One of our resident IT persoms may come up and let us know.

Wasn't trying to confuse the good Mr. Bill.  Just thought we might be able to offer some help from one idiot to another.   :D   99% of all problems can be cured by regularly clearing your cache and cookies as long as you run a good, constantly updated AV program.  For the most part, if you're running a free AV you're getting what you pay for.  They're fine for someone with a computer background but not active enough for guys like me who are lacking in that dept.  Sounds like bobg and goodshot need a better AV package.  Bills problem sounds more mechanical (at least to me) than anything else, like a board going bad or a dust plugged cooling fan.

Bobg and goodshot you both have computer issues that need to be resolved. Those problems are not related to our server. As was said you need to regularly clean cache or temporary internet files from your computer and you need to have a good anti virus program running. There are lots of them out there. I use Avast and yes it's costs a small fee annually but not that much. It works.

You should also defrag your computer on a regular schedule. That too will greatly slow down your computer and prevent it from operating correctly if it is fragmented so that associated files aren't all together.

I have Avast set to automatically do every update when they put them out and that is several times a day. As a result my AV is always uptodate on an hourly basis. It also is continuously checking any and all incoming files for malware and runs a full scan daily as well.

I'm not very computer litterate but Matt has it set up so I don't have to do anything with my AV program it does it all on its own. Cleaning cache/temporary internet files and defragging tho ya must do yourself.

Matt has fixed the problem with the FORBIDDEN message popping up. I haven't seen it since he made the changes. Sorry it took so long on that but his primary hard drive crashed on him and it had many of the files and passwords he needs to keep GBO moving smoothly. It took him awhile to save the files and such to another HD and while it was down we were kinda vulnerable and I didn't want to let any potential hackers to find it out by commenting here about Matt's computer issues. All is fixed now and he will be keeping his backup on a different HD in the future rather than in a partition on the same HD.

To the best of my knowledge there are at this time no GBO related issues.

My computer is set to defrag once a day. I run AVG anti virus but it is the free version. I also run SuperAntiSpyware. It cleans out the registry, file and cookie items. SuperAntiSpyware  was highly recommended by the guy that does the computer work for the local hospital. Not sure what else i can do. Beginning to think it is my computer though. If i walk away for a few minutes the monitor goes black. Have to move the mouse a little to get it to come back on. :o :-\

That's the way you have it set up.  You can change the amount of time it waits before going into the energy saver mode or goes to sleep in your settings.  That is up to you.  The other problems you've mentioned are caused by viruses that your AV has failed to stop.  Like I said, if it's free it's worth exactly what you paid for it.

Yes i did have a virus. I cleaned everything off the hard drive and rerun the set up disk. Should that not have got rid of the virus?  Computer would not work at all until i did that.
Being old and dumb where do i find the settings to change things back to what it was before?

Don't know what you are using.  For example, if you are using windows 7 you would click start, then control panel, then hardware and sound, then under power options you will see change when computer sleeps.  Click there and change it to do what you want it to do.  Different systems will vary from this but will still offer something similar.  This will not help your virus problems though.  Only a good AV will do that.

It is intermittent, a nuisance at best---same with my bladder.
It is not GBO, of that I am sure.
It is a PC and not a lap-top.
I have Mcaffee and it works good---does all it is susposed to do.
I don't know what to say---about my old badder also----nodding off is a definite possibility---I digress; BECAUSE I can't remember what we are discussing--if that is a hint.
Seriously---I just wondered.
