Contender Grip Angle
« on: February 18, 2004, 11:47:03 AM »
Here's something I've been curious about. The G2 grip angle is different than the previous Contenders. Has this changed felt recoil for anybody? It appears to be modeled after the Encore grip angle, which I believe was designed with recoil in mind, considering the larger bores available to Encore shooters.

Reason I ask is, I shoot a Bisley frame SBH in .44, and I find it more comfortable than a regular frame SBH, because of the grip angle. I've not shot a G2 to know; just curious.

I dont know where I heard this, but it is shaped like that to keep you from taking the skin of your fingers when shooting Big thumpers. The trigger guard bites. I know what you mean about the Bisley,I have one too.

I have fired Contenders for years and I recently bought an Encore with the factory rubber grip.

I believe that the angle on the Encore lends itself to less felt recoil.  I have fired both the Contender with a similar load in the 7mm TCU and then fired the Encore in 7mm BR with the same bullet and more velocity.  My shooting buddy and I both noticed the Encore produced less felt recoil.  However, the Encore barrel gave more barrel rise.  I like that better than banging the web of the hand.

I can't understand why TC didn't have a rubber grip available for the G2.  I sent an email to Pachmayer and they said they have work in R&D for a G2 rubber grip.  They didn't say how long before one would be available on the market.

Oh well, let us wait and see.  I wonder what Hogue is doing?

After this conversation, last night about grip angle, I pulled out the Encore with the rubber grip and a contender with the factor rubber backed grip and one with a Herrett finger groved wooden gripe to compare.

The factory Contender grip angle comes closer to a 90 degree (not 90 degrees, but closer) than the Encore.  The factory TC grip also, puts the web of the hand lower on the grip and away from the plane of the barrel.

The Herrett grip has a slightly different angle that is between the Factory TC and the Factory Encore.  The grip also, puts the hand web higher on the grip.

I have the Herretts on a 357 10" and a 30-30 10", but the recoil on both of those guns is very modest with the loads that I use for them.  I used the Herrett on a 357 Maximum with a 200 grain bullet and that baby used to tag me pretty good.  However, I am a real woosie when it comes to recoil.  Recoil is cumulative on the hands, wrists and elbows.    I shoot a lot more than the average person and recoil is a serious consideration for me.

Well, I had another set of Herrett grips and I put it on my 7mm TCU 14" and I will test it Tuesday providing this rain storm passes by then.
