303 british stamped austrailia on handgrip.
« on: May 03, 2013, 08:22:45 AM »
Poor gun is mutilated, but mother-in-laws' grampa gave it to her. beyond restoration, but still shoots. would need new sights. been drilled and tapped everywhere.  :'(  I respect enfields, this one makes me sad. anyway, it is stamped australia on the underside grip portion of what is left of the stock. LOTS of marks on receiver, but what I remember is three little stars with A's in them, and roman numerals 1,2,&3 under them. Had the serial, but lost it. I could get it again if that would help. Id like any info anybody can give me. Thanks.

A.C.
Australian Commonwealth.  This mark is seen 1901 - 1910 and gradually disappeared in favor of the D-Arrow mark. Often found within a shield, or below a shield with a kangaroo within.
The seven-pointed star which appears on many Australian military items can be traced back directly to the Australian flag.  The original 1901 flag had six stars (one each for the six colonies), each with six points. In 1905 it was proposed to add a seventh point to each star for Papua New Guinea.  The 1905 Australian flag is still in use today.

It's almost defnitely made at Lithgow Small Arms Factory, about 2.5 hours west of Sydney.
In fact LSAF still makes firearms for the Australian military.
They make the Austeyr, the Steyr AUG under licence, plus a number of other weapons.
