I was visiting with my grandsons on Friday and after taking them out to eat, we went into a Bi Mart there in the city. They have a 20 gauge H&R on the shelf but it doesn't seem to lock up properly. When closed hard, it will lock up but the release lever sits very low and it doesn't feel right when release.

It's at the old price so I'm interested if I can send it in for warranty without having to pay shipping, I'd be tempted to pick it up. They had one more at this price but this one has a mangled but plate. I'm not sure how either of these 2 left the factory since both have obvious problems.

The Oregon background check system was down or I probably would have walked out with one of them. This store doesn't do layaway...

Any ideas about these?

Prolly we're in the broom closet and when things sold out they drug em out and dusted em off.

The first thing I look for is "manufactured in Gardner or Ilion"... the Ilion ones go right back on the shelf. If these are new ones, I definitely wouldn't buy one with mechanical issues to start with, warranty or not. Stock sets are almost a non-issue with the variety available on GBO classifieds or aftermarket. JMHO

The recent Ilion guns seem to be getting better but I agree, the 1st 1's I saw were absolute crap. What confuses me is that all the Ilion guns I've picked up still have ejectors despite the websites claim of extractors. Oh well, some day H&R will come out of Remingtons umbrella and be more than just an afterthought. But that day will probably be the death nell for the Pardner Pump

I have to go to the city next week anyway and I'll head over there too see if either one is still there. The one with the butt plate problem is easy. I'm going to put a recoil pad on my .45-70 and I could use the butt plate from that one. With my luck only the one with a lock up problem will still be there.

The deciding factor to buying my 12 gauge a couple weeks ago was it had nice wood. Being on sale didn't hurt either. These 2 20's are also at the sale price...

Well I finally got back over there and what would you know, it was still there. They took the one with the lock up problem and put the butt stock on it from the one with the munched butt plate. So it now has 2 problems. I got it for $127 plus $10 more for the Oregon transfer tax.

I already PM'ed Brian56 about it and I'll probably be sending it in for service next week. What's a few weeks more when I already waited this long to pick it up...

I wish I had kept the super clean 20ga. I had a couple of years ago; for the $100 bucks I got it was worth keeping. Gun show dumb I guess; got a table and thought I should sell something.

Now that I have this one, I think I'm going to sell the 12 gauge with the plastic stock. I wonder if I can get $135 for it... I's like new never fired but I added some epoxy inside the stock to reduce the hollow sound...

H&R sent me a label to send it back for service but told me to only take it to a UPS hub. I didn't bother to ask at the time, anybody know why? The UPS hub is about 60 miles from here and I won't be able to get there for a few more days.

UPS will only accept firearms at their Hubs and Customer Centers, not at any third party shop like UPS Stores, you can give it to a driver if you have the opportunity tho.

I had hoped to give it to the driver today but I was still asleep when he dropped off my latest shipment. I've decided to go to town tomorrow or Friday since I need supplies. They should have it in a week or so. If I get it back by June, I'll be happy.

I'm also having them put a recoil pad on it. If I had the bux right now, I would have them put a .357 mag barrel on it too...

You know it's funny that people are constantly knocking the Ilion H&R guns. I purchased 3 Ilion H&R guns last year, two new, and one from a member here, and don't have a problem with any of them.
I think the problems H&R had with the Ilion guns, probably happened when they first started producing them in Ilion. It was most likely a result of the move and re-set up the equipment for producing the guns, from Gardner.

This was absolutely the last 20 gauge Pardner available in NW Oregon. No that many places carry them and if it weren't for the problems, this one would have been gone. I suspect it was supposed to be sat aside for service and someone shipped it instead. I've seen how this happens and I'm not complaining since the told me in advance they'd take care of it...

The 12 gauge I bought to swap stocks with my .45-70 is Ilion, NY gun and as nice as any I've seen. If I didn't have 4 other 12 guages, it wouldn't be listed in the classifieds here.

Update. I forgot to take it with me when I went to town today but I figured it wouldn't hurt to stop at the UPS store in McMinnville and ask. They told me so long as it already had a label on it, it was fine.

There's so many things about small town life that I like. People not being freaked out by gun stuff is only one of them...

When it came back today. The lock up was fix but they completely ignored the screwed up butt plate. It's like they didn't read my note. The guy on the phone didn't add the munched butt plate to the work order so they didn't fix it...

Geesh....., thats disappointing, Tony....; not only didnt the CSR put it down but they didnt read your included note? I cant inmagine getting something into the shop and NOT reading a note with it, but then Im kinda OC......
Is there a 'repaired by' tag to know who worked on it. Sorry to say that until there is accountability (you know, like WE always have to have to our customers) it wont likely change.

I decided to post a pic of the butt plate so y'all know I'm not BSing you. I don't know how this got out of the factory once much less twice... If they had put a new plate on there I would have let it go...

It turns out Brain56 was out the week my gun went in so I at least I know why he didn't see it. I contacted him and I can send my stock in and he will warranty it. However that means it'll be gone for another 2 weeks. H&R doesn't fit pads or butt plates themselves anymore but it's sent to wood company that the freedom group recently acquired. Odds are I would get a stock that's shorter to make up for the length of the recoil pad and I would like the extra length of pull. So I suppose my options are live with it, replace it myself with either another butt plate or recoil pad or send it in.

Right now I'm somewhere between live with it or fix it myself. I'd like to get some shooting in with this gun not have it or it's parts on an another cross country trek... Your thoughts?

They shouldnt shorten it if you send it back, and you could put a BIG stick-on tag with bold red letters NOT TO. Would you rather have a recoil pad? Maybe for your trouble they would do that at the LOP you want.
Short of carrying the thing around I have made cardboard templates and gone to gun shops and shows to dig through the boxes of old take-offs to find 'close' fits. Often the holes arent in the right place but thats an easy fill & drill. Usually a couple of bucks and some time and its good to go.
Or, mix up some black epoxy and fill the voids, sand 'er down and forget about it.

I was told that if I send it in, I would get a different stock as a warranty replacement.

I just had another idea. I could fill in the crevices on the but plate with epoxy and then paint it black again. It would be easy and I could deal with it all later.

The black epoxy works well. I've used it on a couple of Iver Johnson butt plates.
Even if the plate is broken up you can glue a piece of plastic laminate (Formica) to the pieces and fill and form with the epoxy.

Also Numrich has NEF fitted but new butt plates for under $2.00 each.

I PM'ed Brian56 about it and told him I'd rather live with it than having the gun out of my possession for another round trip and he's sending me a new recoil pad for me to fit.

I have to say I'm thrilled with this outcome. I hope to shoot it this weekend rather than it trucking across the country...

The recoil pad arrived today and I'm looking forward to fitting it. This is going to be interesting. Previously the only time I fitted a pad, I just took the stock to my belt sander and sanded them down together. It was a roughly modified stock so I didn't care about taking any wood off, this is a whole different ball game...
