565 gr slug at 1450 fps question
« on: April 10, 2004, 07:19:58 PM »
Actually, I believe that's the Lightfield hybrid sabot slug when it comes out the end of my Remington 870 12 gauge.

After reading posts in this section, I had some questions

Would this recoil from a shotgun be comparable to a BPCR with similar weight and speed?

How would I determine the pressure, and would this be something I should worry about?

I realize that these are more shotgun questions, but given the nature of having to experiment with BPCR to achieve accuracy, I believe the expertise here extends to the specifics and scientific knowledge that would better be able to answer these questions.

(that last bit was my sucking up to y'all)

Thanks in advance.

Parker.
um, er, yeah.  okay.

First, I'll bet your shotgun is a lot lighter than a bpc rifle, my Sharps weighs around 11 pounds. Secondly, I believe that the recoil characteristics of blackpowder vs. smokeless are different, with bp being more of a shove that a punch. So your Remington with the same bullet weight and speed is going to sock you a good bit harder.

parkinsonsd,

I recently shot a paper patched, 550 gr bullet in a 45-90 that chrono'd over my Oehler 35p at 1455 fps.  Powder was 112.5 gr of Swiss 1.5.  Yeah, it was packed in.  Recoil was tolerable and accuracy was very good (2moa).  Barrel was cleaned and dried between shots and SD (10 shots) was single digit.  One good hunting load I think.

Go for it!
