Finally got a pic of my Buffalo Classic. Made the barrel band and sling myself. Barrel band is made from 1/8 thick by 5/8 wide mild steel. Sling is made from 9 oz leather.

looks really cool. I enlarged the pic but can't make out the engraving, old eyes, can you add a shot of it. It's cool you made the band and sling. Always something to say for doing it yourself. I would always rather build than buy.

It is a Bufffalo with a calf beside it. It has some scroll work on the other side.

Thanks Dinny. I likw it a lot. It was the same price as the other Buff classics in my area and not as common so I purchased it. It does kick like a mule with the steel buttplate..... My Classic Carbine is much more pleasant to shoot.

I add a mrr to mine and a lace on pad on the butt to cover the steel plate, helps a bunch

For those of you that have used recoil reducers, do they affect the balance of the rifle? How much recoil suppression can be expected?

Just the weight of the MRR reduces recoil, plus the movement of the mercury inside has a dampening affect on the recoil, much like a shock absorber absorbs the energy, given an MRR and dead weight of the same weight, the MRR feels softer to me, I have a 16oz C&H that works and fits great with a few wraps of tape to make it snug in a wood/lam stock, see the FAQs link for details.

Now I know recoil is subjective, but I have had my BC for what must be getting close to ten years now, and with the exception of a few T-Rex loads I worked up just to see what kind of performance I could get without pressure signs, I have never founmd the recoil anything but pleasant. I also shoot muzzleloaders with curved buttplates and find them more comfortable than the modern flat buttplate, but that is off topic, sorry. Anyway, with my BC, I finally figured out that loads that are in the range of the original loads are plenty potent enough for what I need/want out of this rifle and still handl pleasantly. I usually shoot the Lee 450gr plain base RNFP bullet, and most of my loads are between 1200 and 1500 fps. Are you using factory ammo, or handloading? If you handload, you can always slow down your loads a bit and decrease your recoil also.

I always wonder why these rifles aren't more popular, because other than the occasional complaints about recoil, the excellent accuracy is usually the very next thing people mention.

All I have shot out of it has been the Winchester factory load. I do not hand load as of yet. Would like to get in to it just don't really know all that I would need.

When you start, it will open up all kinds of possibilities for you. My loads have ranged from a 450gr cast bullet at just slightly over 2200fps on the top end, which was less than pleasant, to the same bullet going so slow that you could literally watch it fly down range. This slow load is what I used to load for a friends 7 year old daughter to shoot before she go her own rifle. Recoil was slight enough to be very barely noticeable, but groups were still about an inch at 25yds, which is the range the kid shot these at. My usual 1200-1500fps loads feel about like shooting my Marlin 336 in .30-30, so not bad at all. When you start loading, you will wonder why you didn't start sooner. Just take it slow and careful, and don't let it intimidate you. It is like following a simple recipe, intimidating at first, but you get comfortable and start playing to give it your own special touch soon enough.

I'd buy that... and leave it "stock" except for a Brass Skinner peep and some Lee Shaver inserts. Very pretty! I wouldn't worry about the recoil, I would only shoot soft, reduced cast loads.

Is it just me or does it look like that barrel tapers more than the current buffalo classics? Mine is like a bull barrel if memory serves. Gonna have to pull it out and look again. lol That one appears to have more taper to me.

I hvae a fewlow recoil loads made up that most folks laugh at. I made em up in case dad wants to try and shoot it. He's 86 and worries about the recoil an I don't wana be the one that breaks his shoulder.

It's a trailboss load for 405 gr cast lead and is subsonic, I swear it's quieter then the 22. puff and it hits the target, no recoil that I can feel.

I think it came from the trailboss load data online so you can look it up. Very soft to shoot,accurate enuff also except the gib lock came out (hard recoil loads

) and now the peep flops around. I need to order a new lock.

A friend of mine uses Trailboss in his .45-70 Marlin, and I thought my low recoil loads with Unique were quiet til I saw him shoot his. And you're right, they are quiet. And accurate too. Saw him shoot a 3" group at 200yds with these light loads.

I shoot 405gr Laser Cast TrailBoss loads to 500 yards. When others are shooting their regular hunting rifles, mine sounds like a popgun. It is pretty accurate if the wind cooperates.

Yep, Trail Boss under a 405 gr. cast bullet; 70% starting loads (as recommended by Hodgdon) are powderpuff and 100% (again, per Hodgdon) will equal the full case of Black Powder. So, 80-85% would put you in the middle and still do about anything you want to. Other reduced velo. cast bullet loads/powders can do the same, but I sure do like TB after many years of using Unique (and others).
BTW, 300 and 340ish gr. cast bullets are available and will use lead up a bit slower and not kick as much either.
You can start reloading with a box of bullets, a pound of powder and a box of LR primers. You already have some brass you emptied out. Goggle up info on 'reloading with basic tools' to get an idea on how to punch out primers, seat new ones, throw in the 'right' amount of powder and seat about a .459ish bullet and you will be reloading like the buff hunters.

No better time to start handloading than now if you can find a die set, powder and primers, a Lee Loader will set you back about $30 or less(lots of em on ebay), and it very easy, I cut my handloading teeth with one for my first 45-70, here's a short video on the process, not by me, but might be gcrank tho!
