Firstly, Hello! Then help required :-)
« on: May 30, 2013, 08:51:15 PM »
Hi to all - my first post here. I am a Contender fan from New Zealand hoping to learn from you guys who have much more experience than me!

I am running a G2 Contender - I have .22lr and 2x 7-30 Waters tubes so far.

The issue I am having is with the new-old-stock 21" 7-30 stainless barrel - probably built for the early Contender, not the G2.

It fits, fires and is very accurate with my chosen loads. BUT a strange thing happens.... After I fire, open, extract, insert new cartridge and then close the action, when I draw back the hammer, there is an 'extra' amount of resistance, then a distinct 'clink' as the hammer comes back - like the hammer is catching on a spring, and when it gets back far enough, the spring slips past whatever it is catching on and lets go, making the 'clink' noise. The hammer then continues to move back as normal, and fires the next round perfectly.

This only happens after firing a round. If I work the hammer on an empty chamber or at any other time, the issue does not come up. It also does not happen when firing my 21" .22lr barrel, or my Super 14 7-30 Waters barrel.

Your thoughts appreciated!

Coelacanth.

Sounds like that barrel might have a slightly tighter chamber..  Before you cock it, try opening it slightly and then snapping it shut smartly.  If it then cocks OK you'll know that the chamber is slightly short and your cases need to be sized back a little more.  It's not unusual to have 2 barrels, same caliber with slightly different chambers. If your reloading try a factory round or cut the head off a case and see if it works with just the case head in the chamber, your rim recess could be slightly short. H08

Take a look at the sticky at the top of this forum that talks about barrel fitting issues.  My guess is you find your fix there.
