Maybe that 16 has a slimmer profil then my 12 and just looks longer.  My 28" 12 measures 27.5".

A 10 gauge is definitely too heavy to carry all day turkey hunting but I fail to see how a Topper is too long. What other action type is shorter than a break action? My Topper has a barrel that's almost 28" and it's still shorter than a pump with a 24" barrel on it which is considered a standard size turkey gun in the pump world. You can get Toppers all the way down to 22" which is very compact at 36 - 37" overall length.

Get the fixed choke 12 and if you decide you don't like the pattern it throws get it threaded for screw in chokes. It cost me 85.00 to get it done to mine.

Here we have briar thickets and thick under growth , I often hunt with an 18 or 20 inch barrel. I can't count the times quail hunting or such I went to bring my gun up and it was caught in briars or vines.

My first 870 "big mag. 12 " had a 30 inch barrel on it a real burden. It was soon cut to 23 .75 (where post on rib worked best) and is still in use after 30 + years. But if you have the room go longer.
 I did take the op to ask what I would do.

I hunt really thick stuff myself, my Topper with a 28" barrel has the same overall length as your 870 cut to 23.75" so we are both in fact using the same length gun. Like you I don't care for really long shotguns either but break action guns such as a Topper are very compact so you can get away with a longer barrel compared to a pump.
 
An 870 with a 20" barrel has the same overall length as a Topper with a 24" barrel which was one of the op's choices and what I recommended for a dedicated turkey gun.

Got it fiqured out.  Have a new flat screen that is very wide for its height which means it compacts anything vertical and expands everything horizontal and you pic is horizontal making that barrel look well over 30" long.
