Raging Bull 454 for Whitetail
« on: October 13, 2012, 05:53:59 AM »
Hi guys,
I am looking into buying a 454 Raging Bull to do some whitetail hunting with.  I am thinking I would get the 8 3/8 barrel.  I am curious what you use and what your thoughts are on hunting with the 6 inch vs. 8 inch barrels?  (I know not the exact measurements)
Also there is the blued vs. SS argument.
THanks.

I'm a stainless fan and for a hunting handgun I would go with the longer barrel. JMHO

I like the 5-6" barrel length for carrying.  Still gives me easy 70 yard shot capability with iron sights and good powder burn too.  I personally like blued guns as they don't glint in sunlight as bad.  Unless you get one of the .454's like Ruger's super redhawk which is target grey s/s.  This is my hunter .45 LC Blackhawk.  ;)

I do color the sights to help in low light:

I think I will have to agree with kynardsj.
I think in "most" hunting situations, you will find the longer barrel to be more stable.
Blued vs. stainless is a personal thing.
I like SS. they don't seem to show the bumps that happen like the blue does.
I carry a single shot.
'cause it only takes one shot.

Barrel length is a personal thing.  6-8" isn't going to make much difference, just depends on your preference.  I don't like much over 6" because they balance too far forward for me.

SS-Blued depends partially on weather.  I've had some blued guns hold up just find after being good and wet as long as they get cleaned and oiled.

Go handle a few and see what you like.  It's a .454.  No whitetail is gonna complain either way.

Well, mine worked good on a 6 point.  ;)  How has yours turned out?

I use a Ruger SRH 44mag  7.5" barrel.   I love the way the longer barrel just hangs on target.   For me it is comfortable and the extra few ounces does help mitigate some of the recoil/barrel rise.

The guide on the Raging Russian place, up on the UP, carried a Taurus .454. He said it was devastating on hogs. My issue with it is that it was so big and heavy! He walked around a lot and he was leaning a bit, ha. You will need to hire a poor white kid ( so as not to be deemed a Racist) as a gun bearer for you, lol. I can see where it would be great out of a blind or tree stand. Since I am no good with a scoped handgun, I was never tempted to own one. I was looking hard at the Ruger Redhawk in .480 Ruger when my wrist went verklemped, ended up with a big piece of fiberglass replacement joint. Now Glocks feel better. Good luck to you, and watch out you don't get a hernia playing with that hog leg!

6", Polished SS, Burris 2x6x32 and a 360 gr WFNGC with a nice charge of H110.......devestating on white tails and hogs.

I'm with Corbanzo on this. The 8" felt too nose heavy but the 6" pointed very naturally for me. I've got 2 whitetails between 40 & 50 yards. Since i hunt the salt marshes i went with stainless. Both deer fell to a 300 gr Hornady XTP hps and shoulder shots. Bot bullets exited clean and left an impressive blood trail. Neither deer went more than 20 yards
