1st day at range NEF HR 22-250
« on: June 08, 2013, 04:00:50 PM »
I took two shots at 50 yards to see where things were.  I was high about 3 inches and an inch to the right.  I moved 3 clicks to the left and put the target on what I thought was 100 but was 125 yards.  I was on center and about 4 inches high.  I backed it down a few clicks and moved the target back to 100 which is where I plan to 0 it.  It was still hitting consistently high.  Had to postpone to another day and headed home to hang out with my granddaughter who says she will hunt coyotes so this will be hers.

I know it's not nearly meeting it's potential but I plan to have it sighted in at 100.  Is this going to be difficult due to the trajectory?  Most of the charts I have seen show this going back to around 0 at 250 yards.

Another observation.  Right after the shot, the barrel will not break.  It seems like it has to cool about 10 seconds before the break release will depress.  Is this normal?

My .22-250 is zeroed at 300 yards.  It's Minute of Woodchuck at 100......virtually point blank.

I've never heard of the problem you're having with the release lever.  It should be loose and be able to wiggle it with the rifle closed.  I'd check the FAQs on latch shelf engagement.

I decided to try a 22-250 and after the shot I couldn't get the barrel to open without a lot of force on the release button. Sent it in to Brian and I think the guy that did the paper work wrote it up wrong. Came back to me a little better but is still harder than all my others. Brian offered to fix it again but I'm gonna try shooting it a little and see if it gets better. Just gotta find the time and now the gun as my basement flooded last weekend and I found I have way too many things to throw out ;D

Some here suggested cocking and pulling the trigger a second time which did help to open it IIR. I think your latch adjustment is off a little. Good Luck

That is normal for high pressure bottle nick cartridges in these guns.  The action springs open a little bit letting the case expand, then the action springs back resulting in a very tight lockup with the release lever being real hard tp press down.  Just the nature of the design.  On these you can usually see light across the breach face after fireing a round where before fireing you can see none.  Larry

You want a high pressure cartridge gun to be a tight lockup, it will break in some over rounds fired. Do the hammer drop after firing to see if that works, then just keep shooting it. If you reload you can drop the load by 5 to 10% and maybe solve it too since your distance requirements are not all that severe.

Would sizing high pressure bottle neck cartridges so it just chambers (basically neck sizing) help?

The cartridges are pretty tight to begin with.  It's very strange.  I can put a shell in and pop the release with no problem.  Fire it and I have to wait.

Yes, because the brass is a lot longer after you fire it.  Try putting a piece of fired brass back in the chamber and see if you can close the gun, bet you can't.  Larry

The only thing that helped my wife's was to polish the latch and shelf.
