Something for 45-70 Handi fans
« on: May 31, 2013, 07:04:40 PM »
Just more or less just finished my version of a Buffalo Classic or as I would like to call it " My Mountain Buffalo Rifle" like there ever was a Mountain Buffalo, but who knows.  ;D  Hope you like the pictures.  The good folk's at GunStock's Inc. supplied the semi Inletted stock which they described as Plain Walnut which I thought was quite nice. The front globe is off a BSA Martini #12 I believe. It has a interchangeable post and globe or what ever you want to call it. The rear aperture was from the same rifle that I upgraded the sights on. It has a three position eye piece.I'd like to Thank Tim and the Sponsors of this site for all the information that I used to put this rifle together. Now my favorite rifle of many. 7 pounds of pure Pleasure or Torture depending on how you want to load it. Double click image if you want a closer image.

Looks sweet!  What is the recoil pad? I have been thinking of putting BCC furniture on my Handi 45-70 but that steel butt plate with some of my heavier loads gives me a bit of hesitation!

Nice setup.  You can get the lace on leather pads from Buffalo Arms Company and the sight would appear to be a FP-TK version for the Buffalo Classic and other Handi Rifles.  8)  Eye piece looks like a dial type Kelley Soule style.  That's a great bullet too, same one I use now.

That looks amazing really like the recoil pad. How long did it take you to complet it.
DON’T get in a gun fight with a buffalo hunter there is no such thing as cover against a 45 70

I used a belt sander mounted in my vise when I shaped the cheek pad and slimed down the butt so it fit the pad and blended it into the receiver. After I was happy with the general shape I finished it with a osculating and palm sander. Light Walnut stain and 7 coats of TruOil then 0000 steel wooled the shine off and about 7 coats of Johnson Floor Wax. It weights 7 pounds on my digital bathroom scale. And has a healthy kick. I haven't shot it off a rest but that's to come. I have almost finished my own version of a mercury recoil reducer minus the Mercury. I took a 7 in.piece of a hollow metal broom handle fitted a 3/4" chair glide for each end. I have a 3 3/4" brass oil containers that you would find in the butt of a #4 Lee Enfield rifle if your lucky. Filled half full of #9 shot and about 3/4 full of oil. That's my Mercury replacement. There is a couple cork pads on each end as a buffer and a light spring at each end. My idea was that the fine lead shot in oil would act sort of like Mercury sloshing back and forth. Who knows, it might just work. I'll put some pictures up when I get time.

That's a lovely rifle.  You can be proud of it.  I wish I were still able to use sights like that.

Pretty simple Non Mercury recoil reducer. Brass cylinder with #9 shot and oil almost full with blue locktite on the threads. Kinda makes sense to me but I'm no engineer. I can't say how much it will help other than it's mass but what ever it's worth, here it is.

I had a Ruger #3 in 45-70. Used panty hose in buttstock and filled with lead shot. Worked good. I think your springs may work against you . Seems like they would let the weight slide and not take up recoil....dunno for sure. Anyways, got a handi in 45-70 now and it's a much better shooter than the Ruger ever was !

That is one sweet looking rifle.  And in the correct caliber, too.  Nice work.

So how's it shoot?  :)

I haven't had time to go to the range lately. I took it out once when I first finished it, just to burn up some lead. Nothing on serious targets yet. Late June before I will have time. I can say, That it has a healthy kick  ;)  I'll post some results when I get them.

black lab:

Like Will Smith says in Independence Day, " I gotta get me wunna deez!"  Ordered the stock today.

You know, always thought that 45lc BC was pretty cool.  But avoided them because I didn't want a 45lc and didn't want to rechamber a discontinued rifle.    But the MB (Mountain Buffalo) is it!  What a great idea!

You got a copy cat right here,
