Contender Super16 Barrel ??
« on: June 06, 2013, 03:54:35 PM »
Guys I have a question for the old timers that hang out here. On the Contender Super 16 early single lug- What did the rear sight look like? Does anyone here have one they purchased new with a single lug or anyone that has one that is absolutely sure of the rear sight being original- What does it look like? Maybe post a pic or give us a good description. Thanks.

Double lug 16" barrels do not count as I have plenty of those I purchased brand new.

Guys, in an endeavor to find out about the early single lug Super 16 rear sights I have been looking in every old TC catalog I have. It appears that the Super 16 single or double lug barrel used the same rear sight as the Super 14.  In catalog #16 page 16 they show a petty good picture of single lug 21" & 16" carbine barrels. The 21" shows its unique early rear sight and the 16" rear sight looks just like the Super 14 on page 11 in the same catalog. I'm going to assume this is the way the factory was shipping them unless someone has a early 16" with the unique rear sight the factory was installing on the 21" barrels.

Also the early 16" were high luster blued just like the 14". None of my single or double lug 21" barrels have high luster blue.

I have an original G1 Contender and double hand full of barrels. I looked at the rear sights of my early Super 14's and they all have what look like Williams/Lyman sights in that the sight screws to the top of the barrel but the adjustments are hung off of the side of the sight. The pics I see in the Gun Values dated 2003 shows a sight on the Super 14 and 16 just like the block sights that screw to the top of the 10" barrels and more resemble a factory rifle sight with adjustments to the top of the sight. Obviously, not the same sights. The pics in Gun Values shows the sights on a Super 16 about 1/3 of the way down the barrel. All of my Super 14's, the blades to the sights are actually behind the barrel by about 1/4" and hang over the receiver when in the closed position.
I'm not sure if this is helpful info at all but there it is. Frankly, I've never seen a Super 16 and didn't even know about them until this thread. I guess I'm stuck in the 70's still with Contenders. But mine does have the SSK hammer spring and trigger. Lock time is about 3x faster and the trigger is adjustable to the present 3oz. You don't have to beg mine to go off. Because it's kinda of an oddball, a lot of folks ask to shoot it. I make them pull the trigger on an empty case several times before letting them loose with it. I learned that lesson as a competition pistol shooter put not one but 2 shots thru the roof at the range as dimwit couldn't keep his finger off of the trigger until the gun was leveled on target. Yeah, it's light on the trigger but it sure makes for a fabulous hunter. The 30-30 Super 14 is my favorite barrel followed by the 218Bee for hunting.
I also have the catalog #6 if you think there's anything in it that might help. They are showing the Super 14 as the New Super 14, printed in 1978.

Fox, The early single screw S-16's as well as the single screw 21 carbine barrels did use the same sight as their then current 10 and 14" pistol barrels.  Now when I say the same sight, realize that there were 3 (I think) different blade heights that varied from caliber to another and I imagine from one length to another.  Might have been 4 heights, with my memory or lack there of, I'm not sure of anything anymore. ;)

Walt,

Even though I've been up all night I'd suggest that your memory is doing pretty good pard.

Lets see if mine is and I can get this right the first try....   The 8 3/4"/10" Octagon's had variations in both front and rear (long, short, etc), but I can't remember for sure on the rears.   For the Contender 10", 12", 14", 16" and 21" barrels there was three different blade heights with the older vintage sights, and there is 3 different from them for the newer vintage (IOW, 6 different blade heights).    They worked in conjunction with 6 different front sight heights as a set that depended on cartridge and barrel length.

It's not handy, but in my data base I have the actual heights of all of the fronts, rears and what front and rear was used on what cartridge/barrel length.

The early single lug 21" barrels used a differnt looking rear sight. It had the front mounting screw holding it to the barrel exposed and the whole sight is kind of a strange looking thing. I have a new in the box single lug 21" and it has one of the rear sights. The rear sight in the  corresponding catalog for the age of barrel looks just like the one on my barrel. By the time they started using the double lug 21" barrel it was gone, not sure when they changed it. To the best of my ability to find out which is what my opening post refered to, I don't think the 16" single lug barrel ever used that same rear sight (the one with the exposed front mounting screw) also verified by catalog pics. Ladobe you are correct on those blade heigths. I'm not trying to add confusion but just trying to fiqure out what TC was doing back in the old days.

I couldn't give you what I felt was a correct answer for sure on the 16's just from memory only pard, and I don't make trips over to storage anymore.   I was never really much of a fan of the 16's, didn't own very many of them myself, haven't had any for a long time and have not had a need to try to remember about them for a long time either for that matter.   So old data from old memory to me.
