Arisaka

I just picked up this gem Friday, chambered in 7.7 Jap. Does anybody hunt with one?

It may be interesting as a milsurp piece, but the truth is WW2 Japanese infantry arms are not nearly as highly regarded as those of Germany, US, UK or a host of others.  The Nambus are also interesting as a milsurp..but not as a normal carry sidearm.
Curiously, the Japanese Bushido or warrior code, (from a book I read) tended to downplay putting real resources into personal level weapons, since it was expected that a REAL warrior didn't need great arms, because he was running chiefly..on the "warrior spirit" and could easily overcome those without that code..it apparently was a Bushido thing..
As a kid, we had a 7.7 Arisaka around the house, which my elder brother brought back.  We never fired it, but one day the bolt fell apart..the big "chrysanthemum" rear end of the bolt fell right out.  I don't know what became of that rifle..likely another brother who is gifted with avarice got it.. ;)
Nice for collector..but if you're into hunting with a milsurp, try a Mauser, Swede or Enfield .303..
   That's Just my $ .02

Google P.O. Ackley + Arisaka to find out how strong these actions are compared to other bolt action rifles of the day. None can hold a candle to them...

I found the safeties Aris to be rather cumbersome for hunting.  The same thing on the Swiss K-31.  I just leave the bolt open until its time to shoot.

Read this thread from Surplusrifle Forum http://www.surplusrifleforum.com/viewtopic.php?p=533233
Depending on the type rifle, some unscrew, some have a button that has to be pushed to release the cleaning rod.

When I was a kid I got one that had been passed down through the family.  I hunted with it for several years until I could afford better.  It's been my loaner rifle since then and a few friends have gotten deer with it.

Doing a bit more research, I discovered that Arisakas varied in quality.  Perhaps the one we had was a late model, made toward the end of the war.  http://world.guns.ru/rifle/repeating-rifle/jap/arisaka-3-and-99-e.html

Here's a website you may want to view..a resource for milsurps.  This shows the chrysanthemum bolt knob:

First I don't hunt with one but shoot one. They are ok . I would find them long to hunt with. There was a Gun Smith in Mechanicsville Va. that took one cut it down reworked the stock removing the hand guards , fabricating a barrel band . Turned the bolt handle down and other stuff to make it a very nice hunting rifle. It was very impressive as the gun looked much like a full stock sporting rifle , say a Ruger INT. It polished out very well and his bluing was well done. I do know of one guy who hunts with one and gets his deer every year.
Although the safety looks different if you use the heel of your hand as intended it is very easy to work even with gloves on.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

It's good to hear some folks having some hunting success. I'm planning a pig hunt over Labor Day and I may use it if I can get some more trigger time with it.
I need to get dies & bullets before I shoot it more, and maybe some more brass.
