CVA Hawkins 50cal - should I?
« on: June 25, 2013, 03:28:19 AM »
Hi All,

I have no prior experience with muzzle loaders but have an opportunity to pick up one for not a real lot of cash, thought it may be fun.

So, what is a CVA Hawkins 50cal (besides the obvious) and are there any issues with them as a rule. Is it worth the effort just for fun or should I run away and hide?

Cheers,
Waldyo

O have one and while not the same fit/finish as my Lyman GPR or my TC hawken, it shoots just as well.  As far as issues, just make sure there is no rust anywhere.  Run a tight patch on the cleaning jag all the way down the bore to make sure there are no loose or rough spots.  If I may ask, what do you mean by "not a lot of cash"?  If we're talking $25, I say jump on it.  If we're talking $300, I wouldn't.  Condition obviously makes a difference, but these were never expensive rifles.  For example, IIRC, I paid under $200 for mine brand new back in '03/04, and paid $300 for my TC hawken flinter (used, but looks like new) about 2 years ago.  I know the price varies by region, just make sure it's a fair price and that you're not getting ripped off.

great guns. $175-200 if its in solid shape. ] cva sidelocks these days are gaining value as quick as TC-Lyman lose theirs.

I ended up not taking it. Dollar wise it was down to $275 (Australian $) but it came with a fair bit of stuff so wasn't a bad deal. Overall would have been fun but time is just against me currently to go picking an extra hobby, maybe another day I'll get one.................................

Thanks for the coments,
