In Australia they register knives.
A young woman that was being stalked in Fairbanks and she needed some type of protection. She was too young to purchase a handgun, and she knew when help was needed now, the police was minutes away, maybe. The Stalker had rapped several women, but they were so terrified of him they would not identify him. She went to a shop that sold comix and fantasy items like costumes and swords. She purchased a Broad Sword and took it home. That night the Stalker came to her apartment, he tried to get her to open the door. She refused. So he just put his fist through the door, unlocked the door, and came in. Once in the room. he reached for her. She swung her sword and cut off his lower arm, just below the elbow. He screamed and ran out the door. Several people had heard him break in the door and was standing in the hallway. They saw him run from the apartment, with a bloody stub. When the police arrived, they retrieved his arm from the apartment. They then found the would be rapist at the hospital. He had lost enough blood he died shortly after arriving at the Hospital. Word spread around Fairbanks, and many young women purchased Swords for personal protection. No one had mentioned making them banned or harder to purchase.
