Tipton / Battenfeld Technologies Inc
« on: February 13, 2014, 01:34:00 AM »

For Christmas My wife bought me 4 Tipton cleaning rods. They are a very good one-piece cleaning rod, she bought two for rifle and two for pistol. The one Rifle rod the 22-26 caliber 36 inch rod was a little defective. I tried to clean my Mini-14 with it and the brass tip would not fit down the barrel.

I e-mailed Tipton which is in the Battenfeld group, I did not here back from them for a couple days. Thinking this was the end of it, I checked and the  brass tip on the rod looked as though it had been slightly crushed. I filed the tip and was able to get a brush  screwed into the Rod. And it seemed to be OK.

I then received an e-mail back from Battenfeld saying they would be sending me a new rod if I sent them my address, I e-mailed them back saying that I had filed and polished the tip and the rod is working fine now.

I received a reply back saying they apologize for any inconvenience and wanted my home address, as they would still be sending a replacement rod.

Tipton Rods are more expensive than some cleaning rods but its good to know they stand behind their products 110%.

I believe brass rods are a mistake. The softer brass will embed hard pieces of abrasive material and act as a lap. Quite capable of bore damage. Polished steel (stainless) is best and won't deform as easy as brass..

All of my Tipton rods are carbon fiber, just the tip is brass which is threaded 8-32, darn good rods, nice to hear they have good customer service.

Carbon fiber is carbon threads held together with and suspended in a matrix of resin. The resin will provide the point for the abrasive to embed. They are very rigid but still can produce a danger of lapping damage.  When to materials are brought together with abrasives introduced between them the harder material will be damaged.

I agree with Gunnut.  All my cleaning rods are polished stainless steel, and I use guides.
