AR question, whats it worth?
« on: February 17, 2014, 01:23:18 AM »
I am going to try to help out a buddy in need. He wants to use his AR as collateral on a loan. I am AR ignorant so a little help here would be great. He has a DPMS LR 308,open sights,16 inch barrel 2 small mags,3 large mags,sling and carry case. Gun is in very good condition and has hardly been shot, (under 500) round count. Incase I have to peddle this outfit what could I expect to receive for my investmant? Thanks, Dave

Somewhere around $1000.00 - 1100.00 i'd say.

Personal opinion is a good thing, and everyone is entitled to one.  The hard part is separating informed opinion from someone who is just blowing hot air....

If you need to unload it in a hurry......better figure $750.00 for loan value.

Don't think ya need more numbers since the above seem to be quite valid.  Well at least where I'm from they are.  If you're willing to hold it a while, it's worth a grand or a touch more and less if you expect a quick turnover.  Pretty much a cut and dried deal.

As others have said it is not worth that much.  My guess is you cna put it on a gu shop shelf for about $1,400 and it will sell pretty quick,  You will get about 70 to 75% of that as a consigned item  and about 1/2 of the 1400 being sold out right to the shop.
I have done this with a buddy of mine a few times for a friend of mine where he hands me a gun till he can pay me back.
I guess the questions are;
1) how reliable is he to pay you  back
2) is the friendship worth loosing if you sell his AR after a certain time
3) what are the laws in your state, could you be charged with illegally running a Pawn shop or selling stolen property if you sell it with out his permission?    ( I had a friend, repeat HAD a friend in college that owed me money and he handed me a shotgun to be fixed, after about three years of him not making a payment on what he owed me or paying for the parts I put into his shotgun to fix it, I told him if he did not pay me I was going to sell the shotgun, he had the DA of Norfolk call me and tell me if I sold the gun he would charge me with extortion.  Had to send the gun back to him and have never been paid)

I'd say you're safe to value it around $1k, if its in excellent shape.  Obviously, you'll take a hit, if you sell it via consignment, but that doesn't change the value of the firearm itself.
