Man washed up on boat on Marshall Islands says he's been adrift 16 months, report says Published January 31, 2014 FoxNews.com    An emaciated man whose boat washed up on the shores of the Pacific’s Marshall Islands is reportedly telling a harrowing tale of being adrift for 16 months, surviving on fish, birds, and turtle blood.

The man—who only speaks Spanish—says he drifted more than 8,000 miles in his 24-foot fiberglass boat, after leaving Mexico for El Salvador in September 2012, the AFP reports. He had been traveling with a companion who he says died at sea several months ago.
Two locals discovered the man Thursday when his boat with propeller-less engines floated onto the reef at Ebon Atoll. He has long hair and a beard, and was wearing only ragged underwear, the report said.

"His condition isn't good, but he's getting better," Ola Fjeldstad, a Norwegian anthropology student told AFP by phone. Fjeldstad is part of a group doing research on Ebon-- the southernmost outpost of the Marshall Islands-- who was helping the man.
It’s been difficult to get more details on the man’s story because of a language barrier, but he told the researchers his name is Jose Ivan. He did say that he survived by eating birds and fish he caught with his bare hands, and drinking turtle blood when there was no rain.

No fishing gear was found on the boat and Ivan suggested he caught turtles and birds with his bare hands. There was a turtle on the vessel when it landed at Ebon.
"The boat is really scratched up and looks like it has been in the water for a long time," Fjeldstad said.

The locals who found Ivan took him to the main island, which is so remote there’s only one phone line at the local council house and no Internet. There he met Mayor Ione de Brum, who put in a call to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Marshall Islands capital of Majuro, Fjeldstad told AFP.
Officials at the Foreign Ministry said Friday they were waiting for the man to be brought to Majuro to get more information.

"He's staying at the local council house and a family is feeding him," said Fjeldstad.
Ivan had a basic health check and reportedly had low blood pressure, but he did not appear to have any life-threatening illness and was able to walk with help.
"We've been giving him a lot of water, and he's gaining strength," said Fjeldstad.

From the picture on the internet his face looked way too full to have been out there that long. I would have expected him to be real gaunt. ear

It's by far the most iinteresting news story in a long time. It will be interesting to see how it unfolds, whether the guy really does have edema, which is consistent with high salt intake. Will he remember his home town and phone number? All very interesting. This happens so rarely that we should keep an eye on it. It's historic. Have you seen any pictures of the boat?

Shootall, ocean fish like dolphin (the fish not the mammal) will orient to flotsam, and can be lured with a piece of fish skin or most any other lure. I have personally caught fish by hand (no hook or line) this way, though under happier circumstances. Flying fish will land in boats, and I have personally been on a boat where this happened (suddenly a bunch of fish flopping around on the deck). Some sea turtles are also curious about floating things, and once again I have personally been able to snatch one out of the water by hand. It's not like a lake or a river. Floating things have their own little micro environment that travels with them at sea. If you're interested in this sort of thing, read up on the mutiny of the Bounty and how Captain Bligh was set adrift, then survived for a long time adrift on the Pacific. The sinking of the Essex, which was struck by a whale, is also a fascinating story of drifting at sea. These people who have been able to survive the ordeal are amazing. The symptoms described for this guy: the disorientation and incoherence is consistent with other survivors. It takes quite a while for these people to recover sufficiently. I have read accounts of people who were adrift to the point where they were almost dead, and were rescued by a ship, and the guy actually tried to hide in his boat from the rescuers. Others have been rescued while gnawing on the bones of their dead companions.

Bligh's story in particular is fascinating because it is a magnificent feat of navigation.

I only say my personal experience here to indicate that if I was able to do it, others doing it is not far fetched at all.

That lying thing has been part of this story since day one. It's related to the perception that he doesn't look emaciated enough. The pieces coming together do indicate this is genuine. The wear and tear on the boat are consistent with it. The family is now identified. And so on.

This is such a rare event that there isn't much information about what people are supposed to look like after such an ordeal. Captain Bligh, of mutiny on the Bounty fame, credited his survival with his family tendency to corpulence. While the slim guys that were with him were dying, he managed to survive. There's probably something to that. You see pudginess in a lot of places where semi-famine is the norm, like parts of Africa and Polynesia. People that can store fat survive better in those conditions.

This particular guy looks swolen about the face and ankles. I think that's the edema from salt consumption.
