Now that's a whole new animal we're talking there!...That is if you don't mind a deep bruise brought on by a powerful kick with a bare metal butt plate!....Ouch! :'(
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

I don't have a .45 Colt, yet. I started with a .45/70, I do intend to get one, when I can afford it. But if you could only get one, get the .45/70, it outclasses the Colt in every respect. JMHO, Roy

Roy, I agree with you.  The .45-70 outshines the .45 Colt.  Funny thing though, everything I own out shines my Versa Pack and my 10/22 yet I still have them.  Food for thought.

Maybe when you get a 45LC you'll have a little better perspective. ;)

Both the .45-70 and the .45 Colt are venerable old calibers.  That is why I own them.  Today, they are both much more than they were in the 1800s.  I keep, use and cherish both.  Think of them as two different kids from the same family ;) They're different, but equally loved.

Hmmm, .45 long Colt, isn't that one of the cartridges that Elgin Gates was working on before he passed on to the big shooting range in the sky?

Seems to me that saying a hot, heavy loaded 45LC is equal to a 45-70 on the bottom end is like saying a hot, heavy loaded (ie, 165gr. bullet) 300Savage is like the 30-06 at the bottom end......yep, they both get similar velo, trajectories and performance, but the 300Savage is never going to be a 30-06, no matter how much it wants to.......
But a man's got to know what he wants; if that level of performance is all you want and/or need, that is OK by me, and I do that kind of analysis and decision making myself. I shoot a lot more cast bullet 357Mag loads than I do full on 45-70.

Geeze guys, leave it alone.  The .45LC ain't ever gonna be a .45-70.  Let it go at that. The pistol round is superlative in the Handi.  The .45-70 does it's job as intended, but both .45LC and .45-70  do much more than was envisioned in the late 1800s.  Both are great.  Get them, shoot them, enjoy and shut up.
