SB2

I have a Gardner 45-70  and the bbl is stamped SB2. Is this common?

More common reciently yes.

Dosent really mean anything as it could be put on and sb1 by anyone...

hughd, unfortunetly this is true, all the barrels are stamped SB2, that doesn't mean the frame is an SB2. The only way to tell easily is to take off the buttstock and check to see if the rear of the frame is skeletonized or more solid. Check the FAQ section and it will tell you exactly how to check for SB1/2 and also by serial numbers. Take care, John.

Aren't all .45-70's on SB2 frames from the factory?  I know mine is and also from Gardner, MA.

All modern H&R/NEF 45-70s came on SB2 frames, but the H&R Inc model 155 Shikari did come on their cast iron frame when they made em 1973-81.

I find it interesting that they don't stamp the frames.  What's up with that?  Having to take the butt stock off too check is BS.   Stamping the barrel does nothing but lead to confusion.

I agree with Airsporter....it would only make entirely too much sense for them to stamp the receivers with SB1 or SB2.

You would think in terms of liability. They would be scrambling to
mark at least the new production guns to match barrels with receivers.
Maybe they should model after the kids clothing line. "Garanimals"
You know match the rabbit symbol on the barrel with the rabbit
symbol on the receiver.

May 2008 on frames are marked to ID them, serial number prefix CBA for SB2 and CAC for SB1, but barrels are still marked SB2 on some factory rifles that are on SB1 frames.
