new .41 wildcat
« on: February 27, 2014, 01:46:12 AM »
Hello to one and all;
   Been thinking about building me a new .41 wildcat. Maybe one of you fine gentlemen may be able to help me make a decision. Thinking about using 444 Marlin brass and cutting it back to 2 inches and necking it down to 41 or taking a 356 Winchester and necking it up and making the next short. I'm not quite decided which brass would be the strongest or be best suited to do this with. I do know that they are both supposed be and are quite strong. The last 41 I made I used 375 H&H brass. The rifle was also made for me and a friend started with a greener shotgun made the barrels to fit. I can absolutely tell you if you squeeze both trigger at the same time you will not do it again. I already have two 411 JDJ's one pistol barrel and one rifle barrel.
Any suggestions or recommendations, will be gratefully appreciated.
Thank you for taking your time to read this.

how about a 454 Casull necked down to 41 ? It would be much like a 357/44 Bain Davis in concept. Would have very strong brass and no cutting cases.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Hello,   a short list of 41s I already shoot. 41, 41 special, 41 Magnum, 41 GNR, 41GNR #2,411JDJ,411JdJ short,41x375 H&H,41x460S&W,41X500S&W,41 HAWKS, neck on the 405 has to be size down just a little got that one to. There are a couple more that I've left out because honestly, I would have to look at my dies to see what they are. As you can see a couple of them that you mentioned. I have already made "do not try to put the 41x460 or the 41x500 into a contender or encore unless you really want to destroy them" and possibly injure yourself.Do not ask how I know this. They will work in a Ruger number one. A reputable gunsmith will not chamber these two rounds.
Really, just wanting to add another one to my list.
 I thank all that it read and responded for your input.

deer140,    Sounds like you really like the " 41 ".   My question is where do you find rifle barrels or blanks in that bore size ?  I have wanted one for a long while but never seen them for sale anywhere.
   In my opinion I would not worry about the strength of the parent brass so much, Other than something like the 38-40 or 44-40 or some other black powder era cartridge most all modern brass is very strong if the action you are using supports it well. For a 2.00 " rimmed case the 444 would be best choice.

Hello jebman;
I usually get my barrels off one of the major manufacturers. They usually have some, but you have to get a hold of them and ask that are not of real popular big demand item. I've had had MGM take a couple of 41 blanks for me and chamber myself. You are the only ones that actually read the original post. Which only ask about brass not about other cartridges. You said something about you are looking at a 41 project yourself. What did you have in mind? The reason I chose the 41 and a couple of others. I needed to thin down what I was shooting, too many powders, too many bullets,too much brass. I still have a lot of brass, a lot's of bullets. But not in 30 different calibers. I would hate to have to take an inventory on the brass, bullets,primers and powder that I have on hand just in my house will.
Anyway jebman, have a nice day.
