Why all the wineries?
« on: February 03, 2014, 04:52:25 PM »
I see wineries popping up all over. Even here in minnesota. Whats up with that? A long time ago i tried a minnesota wine and it was like jello flavored battery acid. Maybe its better now. Saw some wineries in louisiana recently too. I'd rather raise strawberries.

Not just China. The developing world is developing a taste for wine, if not necessarily a particularly refined pallet. Grow some grapes. Make a nice label. Get it shipped to China. Balance the trade deficit and give China a hangover!

I like wine, didn't until about 10 years ago. Most nights I have a glass late before bed. Red wine only. My doctor said "1" glass a day has significant effect on heart health. Who know? But my sweet little wife doesn't mind 1 glass a night. Having said all that the little wineries are popular and have made a hobbie/income for lots of folks. I've talk to probably 10 or 15 new owners recently and they all say the same thing. They just enjoy doing it.

Old Fart,

I have tried the one glass of red wine routine but found that it interferes with my sleep. I'll go to sleep easily but a few hours later I'm wide awake and it's hard for me to get back to sleep. I looked into it and it's a pretty common response. It also relaxes me to the degree that I will snore after a glass of wine, and that is not so conducive to a happy marriage. So I had to give it up.

Alcohol is a stimulant for some people. Small amounts (one glass about a 1/3 full) don't bother me.

Sulfides and (sorry) age. I have  the same problem. Mind you, I rarely confine myself to one glass... ;)

I believe it stems from the localvour phenomenon. Couple that with a yuppie ( maybe a bad stereotype) who wants out of the city, wants to be a farmer, and cannot afford 840 acres and a line of equipment.

Buy a hobby farm, run the damn horses off. Buy books, plant vines, buy equipment, work your tail off. You and wife quit your job and bottle wine. Become an independent contractor in IT, bottle more wine. Get a really good gig in IT, bottle more wine. Raise pumpkins, design a corn maze, bottle more wine.

Show a profit, sell the the whole business to someone tired of the city. Move back to the city and tell lovely stories of the country and your years in the wine industry.

This gives me an idea: Conan's Prison Pruno

Just make it like they do in the concrete mama. Do the fermenting in big laundry washing machines, and get the alcohol content way up there.

Alternatively, filter liquid shoe polish through loaves of bread to get the alcohol. Or maybe repackage Purell hand sanitizer.

Mmmm. don't get no better than that.

Grapes? Sure. Throw some of those in too.

 ;)

Some cousins of mine own a muscadine winery here in town.  The claim is that due to the hardiness of the grape it has higher resveratrol.  Anyway, I tend to drink a dry red believing it is healthier for me.

Nailed it, throw in some apple trees and they've got it made. Gotta love all the berry blends, might be better as air freshners than consumed.
