Butt Stock on Contender Carbine...
« on: February 01, 2014, 02:50:09 AM »
I just put together a Contender Carbine in 6.8mm SPC…

The butt stock is absurdly short and simply almost impossible for an adult to use…

Is there some way to make the stock longer—inserts, extensions, etc.?...

I can put one of those slip-on recoil pads and that helps some, but it is still too short…

A custom butt stock?...

This critter is a shooter for sure and I would like to make in functional for an adult—me…

Thanks…BCB

It almost sounds as if you might have a youth stock for your Contender.  Yes the standard stocks are a little on the short side, but unless you have arms like ropes you should be able to use it.  You could always try to add a slip on recoil pad that is probably 3/4" thick and see it that helps, but I would really look at a stock replacement.  Compare the stock on the Contender to a good fitting stock on something else and compare length of pull.  That would tell you a lot.  I have really long arms but get by with the standard stock pretty well.  Bench work is where I have the most problem.  But I have always had problems with stocks on everything.
May be of a little help, I hope.

Interesting...  I stand about 6' 10" tall and can use a Contender carbine just fine.

The bench is where I am experiencing problems also...

Grumulkin--I'm 6'2" and I am having problems.  I put one of those pull-on recoil pads on it and it helped some.  But, I am going to take it off and put some other material in there as more of a filler--probably an inch would make it right...

The 'scope turrets are again the rings so I have no adjustment there...

It is just plain awkward.  But, shooting off-hand can be done...

TC Carbine LOP equals 13.5" as measured on my standard TC synthetic stock.  Youth model stocks are listed as an LOP of 12"....a BIG difference.  I have fairly average size shoulders and arm length and find the 13.5" a little short (I prefer 14"), but quite doable.

Hopalong7...

How do you measure the LOP?...

I have the synthetic stock--not what I wanted, but all I could find...

Measure from the face of the trigger to face of the butt pad.

Yep, that's what I thought...

But, I have  never had a problem with this situation in my life...

The LOP on my carbine is 13.5" which I guess is pretty much as predicted...

Too short for me though...

I put a recoil pad on it--the slip-on kind-- and inside of it I added some styrophom (sp) and increased the LOP to 14.5" or thereabout...

Most of the problem is the extra high rings.  With the 'scope I am using, I need those rings to allow the 'scope end to clear the barrel...

I mostly only shoot medium rings or even low rings on all I have, so this is annoying to me...

I have no idea how people even begin to shoot the "see-thru" rings.  They are a foot above the bore!!!...

Thanks...BCB

On my synthetic TC stock I use a Blackhawk Tactical cheek pad. It lines up much better off hand and at the bench. I use them on my AR's also. They run about $20.00 bucks but are well worth it.

My walnut butt stock has a 14 3/8" LOP. The synthetic I had was about an inch shorter so 13 1/2" sounds about right but I never measured it. It seemed short to me and I'm only 5'10". The walnut works fine.

I had the same problem with my contenders. I am about 6'2" but always felt like I was way up on the Contender.  I didn't have this problem with my Bullberry custom Contender or Encore stocks so I sent two buttstocks (one walnut, one sythetic) to Bullberry and they added permanent spacers in to extend the stocks about 1.5 to 2 inches.  They aren't the prettiest to look at but they are much better to shoot. I also don't remember how much they charged me for the work but do remember that it was VERY reasonable if not downright cheap.

Yep...

I put one of those removable recoil pads on it and I put some filler in it so I gained an inch or so...

I thought about the cheek rest as previously mentioned too...

They will both help, but they look pretty ratty...

If I can get the 6.8mm SPC shooting the way I am hoping, I will most likely invest in some type of wood stock and forend to make it fit better and to give it a better look.  I simply can not get used to the synthetic stocks at all, they look cheap--guess I am from the old days when everything was walnut...

Check the Boyd's website. They have laminate stocks for the Contender at a very fair price and the LOP is somewhat longer.
