New threats to 2A around Post Offices
« on: February 10, 2014, 12:52:11 PM »
Our junior senator for Alaska, Dem Mark Begich is trying hard to do the right thing. He's a bit of a hunter and certainly appreciates how dear Alaskan hold our 2A rights.  Many of us have guns in our cars, snowmobiles etc when we stop by the PO.  Heck in the villages its common to see folks, young folks, driving thru or out of town with guns on our backs, stopping at the gas station or store -no big deal.

But I be a lot of rural areas all over the country are pretty similar - stop by the PO on the way to or from hunting etc with a gun in the vehicle.

The exceptions our senator seeks for Alaska should be extended nationwide.

Begich's title is quite misleading - he is NOT extending 2A rights but only slightly slowing the erosion of our rights.  Call your senator and reps on this item.

Here is the full news item. I'm going to contact NRA and my DC delegation for more info on this.

I think some thank yous  to Rand Paul are in order as well.

February 9, 2014 Begich Fights to Increase 2nd Amendment Rights for Alaskans

Dear Friends,
Protecting Alaskans' right to bear arms is a priority for me which is why I wanted to tell you about my fight in the Senate the week to protect our Second Amendment Rights.
The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, of which I am a member, has held several hearings on postal reform. On Thursday, in the final session before the bill heads to the Senate floor, I fought back against the Democratic chairman who tried to refuse a vote on an amendment related to guns in post offices offered by Senator Rand Paul. I pushed back on the Chair, insisting we take the time to address the issue of Second Amendment rights.
After some back and forth, it became clear that the committee was going to vote against Sen. Paul's amendment so I quickly offered a common sense solution that not only got the support of every member of the committee (including all Democrats and Sen. Paul) but also the NRA. And now the final bill includes language that protects Alaskans' rights. Before my amendment, there was a chance that hunters or others who stopped by the post office with a shotgun or other firearm in their trucks could be found guilty of breaking the law.
The
Washington Times has an article about the hearing that you can read here:

Here is an excerpt:
The measure from Sen. Mark Begich, Alaska Democrat, to a broader Postal Reform bill is meant to head off situations where a person could be charged with a crime if they run into the post office after hunting or shooting, for example, and leave their gun in the parking lot. "In my state, a rural state, we have folks who are going out to the post office [with] a gun in their car, " Mr. Begich said Thursday at a meeting of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. "[You] park and you go in and you may not realize that even though you stored your gun in that parking lot … this solves this problem once and for all."

This is only one example of the ongoing fight I take on to make sure that Washington does not interfere with our rights. And after hearing from so many Alaskans on this issue, I wanted to make sure you knew about this important win for our rights and our way of life in Alaska. As a proud member of the NRA with an "A" rating from the organization, I know Alaskans' right to carry firearms is a valued right no matter where they are.
I hope you'll continue to stay up to date on my work here in the Senate.

Sincerely, Senator Mark Begich

I might be wrong, but I would be very skeptical of why he did this.  Is he doing it because he believes it's the right thing to do for the people - or because he believes it's the right thing to do to get re-elected?

I don't trust any of the democrats.  Some of the ones (democrats) who are up for re-election this year have already started running anti obamacare ads.  The same people who voted FOR it - and have fought any and all attempts by the republicans to amend or repeal it!  You can bet as soon as the election is over they will be right back to toeing the democratic party line.

If they truly wanted to change obamacare there are a whole bunch of republicans who would be more than happy to help them out.  Running the ads is just a way to try to convince the people they care, when they really don't.

It's always the same way with 2nd Amendment issues.  When push comes to shove the democrats always vote for more gun control (or "reasonable" gun control as they are fond of saying)>

So what's new.
I went to work for the "United States Post Office" in 1969.  Work rules and public signage were explicit and enforced.  NO FIRE ARMS on Postal property or in Postal vehicles.  No knife blade permitted over 2 2/3" long.  Rules been in place for 45 years or more.

Spruce, I'm sure he did it to help him get re-elected as he is being targeted pretty hard to be replaced by GOP.  As a Dem in Alaska and only 1 term he is vulnerable.  But I think he's also doing it for the realities of a lot of Alaskan communities and how things normally work here.  Awful lot of guns in cars/ snowmobiles/ 4 wheelers  and they probably stop at the PO on the way to or from hunting or just traveling.

Hodr: I was unaware of the long term rules and probably have broken them myself.  I don't recall seeing such signs in Alaska but that doesn't mean they aren't there - I just haven't seen them. In winter in rural Alaska it is common for folks to drive in or thru town on a 4 wheeler or snow mobile with a gun on your back.  Even stop at the gas station to fill up before heading out on a hunt - my kids and I do it now and then. Pretty normal to stop at the  PO too tho I don't see vehicles w guns outside our PO - but I wouldn't be surprised to see it in the smaller villages.

Before thievery was a problem, it was very common on the highway system to see pickup trucks with a gun rack in the back window with guns in the rack.  They were there where ever the driver took his truck. Don't see that now tho.

This is a little different but during moose season, I've seen guys in a bar in Talkeetna playing pool and several had a handgun in a holster on their belt.  Nobody seemed to notice at all.

just one more chip in chipping away our Rights. These are Rights, not something subject to inroads by politicians. The Second Amendment is part of the Bill of Rights. Not the Bill of sorta, kinda, maybe.
