super g ranch
« on: February 05, 2014, 10:58:53 AM »
I am planning a pig hunt for my girl friend in march has any one hunted at the the super g ranch?  She went out deer hunting twice but because of a medical issue and work couldn't get out but two times.  This I hope should be a nice birthday present for her.  I also wondering on caliber she has a ruger bolt action 44 mag or  h&r 357 maxi (she has a 458 socom but no scope or sights will put on if its needed and her trained on it).
  Any help would be appreciated

I looked up Super G Ranch.  It looks very interesting.  I'm considering going there too.

I'm a confirmed Handiholic, but despite my bias, I'd choose the Ruger .44 for a quicker second shot if needed if all she was hunting was meat hogs.  I'm sure the Maxi would work as well, but is going to be a tad slower on the second shot. I'd use a solid bullet running hot in either.  She needs to have a look at hog anatomy.  The heart lung area is quite different than a deer and there's a substantial gristle belt to deal with.

If I go, I'll take my shorty .445 and .45-70 Handis.

I looked them up too. Sure have good prices on pig hunts. About twice that up here. As to a gun Either caliber will work fine if your shooting hard cast bullets. If it is jacketed or factory stuff id skip the hps and go with a good flat nose bullet. Anything 240 or heavier in the 44 and id probably opt for a 180 in the 357. Hogs arent all that hard to kill. They act like a bear when hit and tend to lay down fast if hit well. A deer seems to have more want for life and less reguard for pain. But they are heavier boned and do have the grizzle shieild so you do have to pick something that has decent penetration. I wouldnt get to conserned about a back up shot. Chances are shes not going to keep her head in the game well enough to make a second shot on a running pig anyway and if its running toward you your guide isnt going to give you time to shoot. dont get all wrapped up in the belief your going on some dangerous game hunt. Its very rare that they go after a human unless shot poorly and even then most times they just want to get out of dodge.

Thank for the advice it is currently sighted in with 240 grain hornady leverolution.  What do think is ideal on factory ammo?  I would of  never thought of the shot placement being different than deer.   I will post pics after I go for you all.
Thank you agian

I can't advise you on the factory ammo.  The only factory stuff I've shot are the .44 mag LEs.  I wouldn't use them.  They are actually a hollow point with a plastic tip.  I've had them shed their jackets in a single gallon jug of water.  I'd follow Lloyd's advice.  In my .445, I load and shoot a .433. 240 gr. SWCGC Montana bullet at about 2000 fps.  It's considerably slower in the .44 mag mode.
