Weaver Side Mount for Savage 340B 222 Rem?

Optics are far from being my forte, so I would appreciate comments that correctly assume I know nothing.

I have a Savage 340B in 222 Rem that is an absolute joy to shoot and with which I am remarkably accurate (Redfield aperture sight) out to 100 yards. Thereafter, my eyesight doesn't live up to the abilities of the rifle. I would like to use it for coyote hunting and need to extend beyond 100 yards.

The rifle was factory drilled and tapped for the Weaver side mount and I have one. My question is whether these side mounts are at all effective. It seems like there are are so many potential issues with the side mount for an off bore axis that I wanted to check with those more knowledgeable than I whether it is worth doing or not. The "worth it"  part is that I have to shave down the stock lip around the mount area as it is too high to allow the mounting otherwise.

I had a couple of 340's. One hornet and a 30-30. I know I had a scope on the hornet, and I believe I had one on the 30-30 as well. Never had any issues with the mount.

I've got a 340 in .222 with the side mount.  It's not the sturdiest mount, but it does the job and does it very well.  The gun is much more accurate that I expected it to be.  The only problem that I noticed was that I could not use a scope with the turret housing that projects all around the scope.  I solved that with a vintage Weaver V8.

Thanks guys. First hand experience is worth a lot. Appreciate the thumbs up. Will likely use a vintage Bushnell Scope Chief with the command post reticle.

Side mounts used to be somewhat common a few years ago when everybody was tinkering with gobs of cheap military rifles that had split rear recievers.

         I had the exact rifle with the side mount but can't recall the scope that was on it. I sold it to a relative who attempted to put a higher magnification scope on it but ran into  clearance issues. It gave him the perfect excuse to give the .222 to his son and bought a new rifle and scope for himself. In my opinion the side mounts leave a lot to be desired.

Well. I've mounted it. And I think I've bore sighted it. I fear that it may "leave a lot to be desired". We shall see at the range.
