Tested the 250 Savage Barrel

I finally shot my 250 barrel. I was able to keep the groups at 2" using Winchester 100 grain Silvertip factory ammo. My handloads were paper plate groups at 100.


I'm pleased with the performance, but have to do some tweaking with my loads. I think my brass may be the issue since I used RCBS case forming dies to make 250 brass from 243 and 270. Bullet grip may be the problem since the shots were high or low.


I do love how the 250 report and recoil is just right let you know you're shooting a classic.

I'm ignorant about the .250 Savage.  Can you neck up .22-250 brass for it, and who did it and how was the barrel made?

Try the 87 grain Hornady spire points with a medium dose of IMR4320 traveling around 3000 fps.It shoots very well in mine. I got the load from Bob Mileuk (sp) the gun writer it really drops Whitetail deer in their tracks :)

Just FYI, 308 class cases are not the best for the 300Savage class of cases. The rim dim is the same .473 but the base dim .469 vs .471 is too large. Resizing dies do not size this area of the case. Use 250-3000 or 300 savage cases for proper dimensions. In a big chamber you may not notice, but in a tighter chamber you would.

As CW said 308 cases are too large at the base. Best way is to buy 250 Savage brass and not near as much work either!

Several years ago I had a SSK Industries .250 Savage T/C Contender Handgun Barrel. I necked up .22-250 brass to make my .250 Savage Brass and never had a problem. I really could not tell a different in apparent pressure or velocity between .250 Savage Brass and my reformed .22-250 .250 Savage Brass.

I have a friend who has too many rifles.  So much so that he never gets to shoot some of them.  So of course I have offered to help him out with his problem.  I've asked if I could start with his Rem model 7 in 250 Savage with a light wt synthetic stock.  I think I could really get to like a combination like that!  I might even forget where it goes and would be unable to return it!  I think that's why he hasn't offered it to me yet.  :)  44 Man

OP, Since the formed brass is exhibiting signs of varying degrees of neck tension, had you considered annealing the brass after forming?  It makes a big difference in uniforming the neck tension.

I wanted one in a Ruger LWT for my wife...ended up with a 257 Bob. It was WOEFULLY inaccurate. I sold it off before I tore into it. ;) too bad it was a real nice rifle!

I would love to have one in the 116 Savage weather warrior- stainless, probably put a 2X7 Redfield on it. Should make a great all weather rifle for all but  large game. I wished for a 25/35 in the handi- but that was not to be either.

I had Wayne York make the 250 Savage barrel for me. The barrel was a H&R 223 barrel originally. It was rebored and chambered

Thanks for the tips too. Hopefully I can find some more 250 brass. I came across a good deal on the RCBS case forming dies and I had a pile of 243 and 270 dies to donate to the cause.
I'm going to neck size the once fired cases and see how that helps.
One thing I did notice is the factory loaded Winchester ammo is touching the rifling when it's chambered and I seated my handloads off the lands. I can maybe increase the length my loads to get a little closer.

My handloads were hitting high and low with about a 6" spread.

Well I went and bought a used Handi just so the 250 barrel could have it's own action. I fitted it and shot. I was so pleased to see it group 1" at 100 yards. It's an bright blue receiver with brown laminate wood. I figure a cartridge designed in 1915 deserves better than plastic stocks.

Think a 250 Savage is cool? It is,but you should see a 250 Savage Ackley Improved. Right on the heels of the 25-06.
